.::Bind::.

Edgehollow was a pretty strange name for people to give a town. There wasn’t really an ‘edge’ or ‘hollow’ to speak of, but if by edge, the citizens meant ‘the edge of civilization’, then someone could understand at least half of the name, since the place was in the middle of nowhere. Somehow right on the border between Illinois and Kentucky, Edgehollow was the closest a town could get to being in neither the north or southern states in the US, though it was definitely further east. Because of its location, Edgehollow got people from all sorts of different places, although it wasn’t a big center of trade, so it was mostly self-contained and isolated. Most of the reasons people liked Edgehollow was because the town wasn’t as involved with the rest of the world, and it had a peaceful, old-fashioned flare to it that made it oddly comforting.

Overall, the town had grown a lot bigger since it had first been built, which was 213 years ago, and the residents had maintained its look for as long as the settlement had stood. Edgehollow was spread over a very large area, but despite its size, it couldn’t ever be seen as a true city, simply because it didn’t have a single tower to speak of. The tallest buildings to speak of had three floors, not including if they had basements. Most of the structures in the central part of town, the very heart of the place, were old brick buildings stacked together, with hand-painted metal or wooden signs, and fabric sails that covered glass shop windows. Here, a lot of shops were located on the first floor, and then the owners, as there were many family-owned businesses, lived in the upper levels. There wasn’t much to be found interesting about the town’s history, but residents took pride in it, all the same. Edgehollow was an independent town that fended for itself.

Surrounded on all sides by forested wilderness that went on for miles, and only connected to the outside world by a few roads, it wasn’t surprising that those seeking to live a simpler life would come to live here. What most didn’t know, though, was that the allure of Edgehollow also attracted many residents; those of a nature that wasn’t human. From the very beginning filled with humans and creatures that possessed powers of a supernatural nature, magic and strange things were secretly laced into many different aspects of the town. From the strange creatures that artists had carved into the trunks of ancient trees in the central Edgehollow Park, to the sculptures used to decorate odd street corners and walk ways, and even old murals painted across the brick sides of some buildings, the evidence of strange beings was everywhere. Some of the art was done by normal hands, but others were done by those that held secrets they could never mention directly. The dragon statue on the corner was a real thing at one point, and so was the wolf with bat wings and antlers. They were all real, but nobody knew that, except for those who were born aware, or those that were born from a world different from ours. Everyone else simply thought it was the artists’ imagination at work. Others knew better.

Now, it is just after the first day of school, after all the students returned back from Spring Break. Despite how much of an area the town covered, school buses always managed to carry students to the respective school they belonged to on time. Although there were multiple preschools, elementary schools, and two middle schools, all of the schools eventually led to the students being brought to the single high school in town, fittingly named Edgehollow High. With no easy access to other schools in the state, of Illinois or Kentucky, sports were the last thing on the agenda of the town’s independent school system, academics were more important, and so it was that there were no glorious things expected in a typical school. Cheerleaders and Football players were nonexistent, and since there was only one high school, everyone had to be content watching students from younger grades compete, though it ceased to be important later.

Students were treated nicely the first day back, and so it was that there wasn’t any homework in any class, and most of the teens were left to their own devices.

In the light of a waning crescent moon, a black-clad figure ran about, leaping between rooftops, wearing black leather armor, with a hood that pulled up to cover his head. His face was hidden behind a mask, accented with a dash of bright yellow that ran down the forehead, and small yellow rings around the expressionless eye holes that framed glinting amber eyes. He was lean and muscular, from what could be seen, and rather tall, at that, although someone got the distinct impression that he wasn’t an immature teen doing something crazy. Risky, perhaps, but the determination seen through the eyes that peered from behind the mask suggested that he had an agenda that he wasn’t going to allow to slip between his fingers. Strapped to a belt at his waist was a black sheath with pressed designs, and the grip was of woven leather. He seemed to carry on his person a katana blade, one that was a genuine weapon that could do damage. He made little sound, although he could hear the sound of his own breath, and his heartbeat.

Paul arrived at where there was a gap between two buildings, and looked down into the alley, making sure that he didn’t cast his shadow into it, though there was little moonlight that could do it. He watched as another figure traced a strange pattern with white chalk onto the ground. It struck him that he recognized the young man that was doing it, though he wasn’t sure of what the pattern was. It was a person only a little younger than him, of average height. He had pale pink skin, and two features that made it easy to remember his face. He had thick, healthy and sleek raven black hair that was grown long and fell past his chin in waves, not a single broken or split end to be seen, which was recognizable because hair so healthy or nice was rare. The second feature was the perfectly round silver wire-frame glasses that looked as though they belonged to an older time period. The attire of the person had not changed at all, since the last time Paul had seen him, although he saw that the young man was also this time wearing black gloves, ones that fit perfectly over his aristocratic or feminine-looking hands. He saw strange symbols stitched in red on the backs of each glove, as the stranger drew the chalk pattern.

Paul, hidden behind his mask, frowned, looking around. He hadn’t come here searching for this person, the one who had saved his life after he had gotten hurt in a fight. He had been completely selfless, not even knowing who Paul was, and yet taking him to his home to recover, and Paul, having not wanted to get the poor kid involved, had left without revealing his identity, or even giving a name. He didn’t know the kid’s name, either. He also didn’t know what those strange patterns were, or why he was wearing the gloves, except that he was very close to a dangerous presence Paul sensed. Paul continued to look around, waiting for the Dark Spirit that had appeared here to reveal itself.

“Shayla, this is dangerous, we shouldn’t be interfering with Seers and their business. Most Seers know our kind exists, but there’s an Alchemist down there, too, and Alchemists don’t know.”

On a rooftop a distance away from where the black-clad Seer standing, looking around for a Dark Spirit, while seeming confused about the Alchemist drawing a transmutation circle in the alley below, two girls sat crouched behind an outcropping, for the most part hidden on the other side of the triangular shape on top of the building. One was a tall girl who had dark brown eyes, and long, wavy auburn hair that fell down to the middle of her back. She was dressed comfortably in a grey t-shirt, worn under a light black hoodie and matching black yoga pants, which bore a white stripe running down the legs. Even under this clothing, one could see that her limbs rippled with muscle. The only thing that looked strange was that she had somehow wound up on the roof of a three-story building, and she was also completely barefoot, though the soles of her feet seemed quite tough and calloused. Shayla was her name, and it seemed the other girl hiding right next to her was trying to dissuade her from something.

“Not this Seer, Opal, he’s looking at that Alchemist’s transmutation circle like he’s never seen one before in his life. Besides, I’m keeping my aura masked the best I can, he’s waiting for that Dark Spirit I picked up earlier to show. It’s bound to attack him, Dark Spirits always go for the Seers, and they have stronger spirits, tasty morsels.”Shayla replied, glancing briefly at her companion, before returning to her observing.

Opal wasn’t small, but she wasn’t as tall as her friend, either, she was about an inch short. Small and wiry, with long limbs, she wasn’t that heavily built, but she looked lean and athletic, like she did a lot of aerobic workouts. She had a somewhat triangular face, and a very wide mouth, although her gigantic round eyes, which were an intensely bright shade of blue, immediately stood out.  Flaxen blond hair formed a feathery layered bob about her head, and overall, she reminded someone of a deer or horse, not having the most attractive appearance, but even with the slightest turn of her head indicating strange grace. She was wearing a black short-sleeved t-shirt, and a pair of denim shorts that were just above the knee. Like her friend, she was barefoot.

Opal frowned, “I’m not sure I like it when you talk about spirits like they’re food, you’ve never actually eaten one, have you? I know you look like a Demon, but you’re really a Fay, right?”

Shayla frowned, keeping her eyes on the Seer and Alchemist, “No, I’ve never eaten a spirit, living or dead, but yeah, I guess I’m a Fay, I’m not a guardian, or anything, but I’ve never done anything to break the laws of my kind.”

Opal look relived, “Then why did you talk about spirits that way?”

Shayla scowled a bit, “Well, it’s the truth, isn’t it? The more power a spirit has, the tastier it is to the Demon or Dark Spirit that devoured it. Come on, I don’t like talking about this sort of thing, it freaks people out. Let’s just watch and see what happens.”

Spoiler:

Driving down a sixty mile per hour highway at eighty miles per hour was a black 1987 Buick Grand National X. Its owner really didn't seem to care that he was twenty miles above the speed limit, and he maneuvered between the light traffic expertly, merging around slowpokes and gunning it up to ninety as soon as the road opened up. Nobody really seemed to mind, though. There were no police officers around, and the act of calling the police on a speeder while driving sixty-five miles per hour in the fast lane of a three-lane highway was a death wish to begin with. Three of the car's windows were cracked slightly, and the passenger-side window was wide open. Hanging out of said passenger-side window was the head of a grey pit bull, its tongue flapping in the breeze and a wild smile on his face. The radio blared "It's a Long Way to the Top" by ACDC at near full volume. The driver of the car was a tall, elegant-looking black man wearing a black wool longcoat and a matching stetson. His eyes were fixed on the road ahead of him over his round rimless spectacles, and both of his hands gripped the top of the steering wheel. He quietly sang along with the song with a voice that was in no near future going to be recording rock albums. The dog pulled its head inside of the window and moved its left paw to the volume nob on the radio. Before it could turn the volume down, one of Marshall's hands grabbed its paw tightly.

"What have I told you about touching my radio, Amos?" Marshall asked in a deep southern voice.

"If I do it you'll take me to the vet and have my balls cut off." The dog replied, lowering its head towards the carpet and whining.

"Ok then I'll have him do it and he can get his balls chopped off instead." the dog said to itself with a slightly higher voice.

"I hope you realize that my balls are your balls too, Navon." Amos replied to...himself.

"Oh, then yeah don't touch that radio."

"Either way," Marshall cut into the dog's pseudo-schizophrenic conversation with itself "It's against the laws of the universe to turn ACDC down. The volume knob only goes up."

"How do you still have working ears, Marshall?" Amos replied.

"Because I only listen to good music." he mused "These kids who listen to the equivalent of a keyboard smash on a synthesizer and call that music are both harming their ears with ridiculous volume and are further damaging their ears by causing them such suffering that they rebel against their wearer, causing further damage." With that, the conversation seemed to go silent. Marshall got off of the highway on an offramp labeled "Exit A-16. Edgehollow, Ky". Within five minutes he was cruising at a leisurely pace through a path with woods on all sides. It was a certainly calming ride, one that Marshall enjoyed quite a bit. His furry companion did not like the ride nearly as much, and so rested its head against the window and whimpered.

"You ok, boys?" Marshall asked the dog.

"I don't like the look of this place, Marshall." Amos replied.

"And I don't like the smell, boss." Navon added "I just caught a whiff of a cockatrice that's within a mile of here and at least three demons. There's a few seers and assorted other mythical creatures too. Do I smell...something Chinese?"

"Yeah, I'm getting that too." Amos replied "I don't detect the smell of ashes or burning wood, so it's probably not a dragon."

"Maybe a Quilin?" Marshall interjected "Haven't seen one of them in a while."

"No. Quilins have a distinct scent of sea salt and Tanzanian mud. This smells more like a pasture in spring."

"Hm. Don't know what that could be." Marshall continued to drive despite the dog's protest and soon arrived at the front of a house he had rented for this particular trip. It was a one-level grey rancher on the top of a hill overlooking the forest outskirts of the town. Not only was the view quite beautiful, but it would provide a good strategic position incase something less than savory came to call. He backed the car into a gravel driveway and opened the door, taking his first step onto the fresh green lawn still speckled with morning dew. He caught a rooster slowly bobbing down the street, but dared not make eye contact with it. You could end up dead that way. He opened the back seats before locking the car and grabbed his wood-paneled Winchester 1873 repeating rifle from where it laid strapped in on the back seat. This gun was his most prized possession, and he hated parting with it. He held the gun by the barrel and walked up to the door of the house. The keys that the landlord had mailed him slid in and the door opened into a small, semi cramped living room orbiting around a flatscreen television on a stand. There was a leather couch and an armchair positioned in front of the tv, and a fireplace on the opposite side of the room with a wooden rocking chair and an old-fashioned red leather armchair. Marshall placed the gun on the coffee table, hung his hat on a hook by the door, and flopped onto the couch to rest his legs. Amos and Navon walked over and curled up next to him on the floor. They'd unpack the car in a little bit, but for right now they would rest and recuperate for the hunt ahead. Marshall made a note to himself to check out the bar scene later that day. Hopefully they'd have something good on tap.

"Pink"

A strange woman roamed the town. Just like she usually does. Dressed oddly, and acts the part. Dressed heavily in a red winter coat, a white dress shirt under that, a pink tie, red racing gloves, black boots, and goggles. She wandered down the streets of Edgehollow as a human... When actuality, Pink is a high-level demon in disguise. A monster in the skin of a human, desperately waiting for the chance to . Hmph, you'll get your chance some day. The barrier will come crashing down, and the wave will make things a little nicer. Pink's eyes peered towards a couple walking by, she gave them a evil grin that caused them to keep distance. Things are pretty dry around here, right? During her march through town, in a desperate attempt to, appease her boredom. She stopped for a moment, and looked up, and around. Almost like she expected something to be flying around that she can throw water at. She saw two mysterious women on the roof, staring at something and having a conversation. Pink narrowed her eyes and tried to listen in. No matter how hard they tried to hide it, Pink knew that one of them was a demon. Which interested her enough. Oh! She wondered what they were doing. Probably about to feast on some fool. "Oooooh?" She exclaimed to herself.

They looked so lonely up there, it would just be a crime to not climb up there and give them some company. Pink slipped into an alleyway, her body quickly converted into a puddle of water, including her clothes. Her transformation was complete in moments, but then Pink went up a storm pipe up onto the roof with Shayla and Opal. The moment Pink was on the roof, she re-materialized, and was (appearing) human yet again. She did absolutely nothing to mask her steps, as she walked up to the pair. In a moment of utter oddness, she threw her arms around them, and rested her hands on their shoulders. "Whatcha' doin?" She asked, playfully.

Nicholas was out for the night, and it was late, but considering that he had a transmutation he badly wanted to test, he saw no reason doing it in his cramped room in the basement, where if he messed up, there would be books and research notes scattered all over the place, the order he had worked so hard to preserve being messed up. As a result, the place he had chosen to draw his transmutation circle in this time happened to be in the middle of a wide alley, which offered a nice, flat surface on the ground for his chalk lines, and some degree of seclusion that would allow him to keep from revealing his practice to the public. Alchemy wasn’t something that was accepted by the world, and while Nicholas knew there were other Alchemists in existence, their science, one that broke or defied certain laws others were bound by, would never be fully understood. Nicholas had to keep it a secret, because chances were, if people found out a sixteen-year-old like him could do it, it would cause a panic.

Normally, it didn’t take Nicholas any time at all to draw a transmutation circle; he could do it in a matter of seconds, being something of a prodigy in his field. However, considering that this was the first time he had drawn this particular circle with the intention of using it, he took his time, to make sure he didn’t make any mistakes as he made the lines of chalk on the ground. He was just about finished, when he felt a powerful force clamp down around him all of a sudden. His heart sped up to a gallop, and he immediately felt a wave of panic wash over him. He felt like he had been grabbed by something, and it was like a vice, but he couldn’t see anything. He felt even more alarmed, when he felt something pull up, and his feet lifted away from the ground. He was floating, and something had picked him up, but he couldn’t see anything holding him, and he couldn’t twist his head around to look, either. Something had picked him up and--was he dreaming? It felt too real to be a dream, and his heart was pounding. He felt himself breaking out into a cold breath, and as the grip around him tighten slightly, his breathing became more panicked.

He glimpsed a shadow pass over, and looked up to see a figure leaping right over his head, one that immediately jumped out to him, because he had seen this person before. He was wearing black leather armor, and the strange, expressionless mask that only had holes for the eyes, and small ones so that the wearer could breathe through the nose. Almost everything about the stranger's clothing was black, except for the faintest hints of canary yellow on the mask. The last time Nicholas had seen the guy, though, it had been a year ago, and the stranger had been badly injured, covered in what looked like claw and bite marks. Nicholas had helped him by tending to his wounds, despite misgivings he had about assisting someone he didn't know who looked as though they had been mauled by something even more terrifying than a bear. The stranger had been unconscious, but had woken up before his mask could be removed. The instant he was awake, the warrior had left, not saying anything else. Nicholas had thought about the stranger often, but he had never expected to see him again, and if so, not like this.

The warrior sailed over Nicholas' head, a gleaming katana in his right hand, strange white marks and symbols seeming to dance and drift over the blade, as though it were alive. He flew out of sight, but as soon as the stranger was out of the Alchemist's line of sight, he felt a shudder come from the thing that was holding him, and suddenly, the invisible fingers that had been holding him loosened, and completely let go. He cried out in surprise as he fell down and face-planted on the concrete, his arms aching as they caught him. He gasped for fresh air, realizing that his lungs had been suppressed, and flopped over onto his back to look at what had grabbed him.

The stranger, his sword positioned so that it faced downward, as though it had been jabbed into something, had vanished all the way up to the hilt, as though the blade had suddenly disappeared. The stranger's bright amber eyes peered through the mask at Nicholas, as he gave the sword a tug, and the blade re-appeared. There was a thudding sound, and the stranger, seeming to lose his balance, jumped off of where he had been suspended mid-air, landing on the opposing rooftop, as there was a cloud of dust that rose up in the alley, as though something large and heavy had fallen.

Nicolas stared at the dust cloud, and began glancing between it and the warrior, trying to make sense of it, when a male voice finally cut through the silence, "You okay?" The stranger called down to him. It was a baritone voice, a bit deeper on the scale, but definitely not a bass.

Nicholas, unsure of how to process things, found his throat was too dry for him to speak. After choking for a few moments, he finally swallowed past the lump in his throat, and slowly nodded.

There was a sudden shake, and another cloud of dust rose up, and Nicholas felt gusts of wind blow past. The warrior took on a battling position, "Hey, get out of here, it's getting up!" he yelled.

Nicholas wasn't able to move in time, and he felt the vice-like grip grab him again. Was it him, or did he hear a girl scream just now?

______________________________________________________________

Opal, upon feeling the woman come up behind her and speak, jumped up, and screamed, sounding like she had been really and truly startled, almost comical, that she had been frightened so thoroughly. After she slowed down her breathing, she swallowed, "W-what are y-you doing here?" She asked, her limbs shaking, and her heart pounding.

Shayla's response was almost dismissive, despite the fact that a complete stranger had managed to sneak up on her. Well, it couldn't be helped, she didn't have her superior sense of smell in this weak human form. Obviously this woman must have been some sort of Demon or Fay. At any rate, she glanced at the woman, "Ah, hello, can't talk right now." She looked at Opal, still spooked from the appearance of the stranger, "Sorry, I'm getting involved, I'm not going to watch some poor guy get eaten." With this, she threw off the woman's arm and jumped up onto the roof, running down the side and leaping out into the air. At this exact moment, she transformed, her hair darkening to a sleek, iridescent black, like the feathers of a raven. Her teeth grew sharp, and her canines elongated into fangs that poked out from her mouth. Her nails on her hands darkened and lengthened into wickedly-sharp bird-like talons, and her toenails turned black, also, becoming thick and blunt, like the feet of an ostrich. Her scleras turned a deep blood red, and her irises flashed gold, as she instinctively gave into the desire to let out a loud, inhuman-sounding snarl.

Opal threw off the woman's arm, and looked over as Shayla charged out to go and attack the Dark Spirit preparing to devour the Alchemist. It was big, and powerful, too, a high-level one, if she ever saw one. It was an enormous humanoid sort of creature, covered entirely with brown, white, and grey feathers, long, hair-like plumes mimicking a horses' tail coming down to stop inches just above the ground. The creature's hands and feet were humanoid, but also armed with claws like a bear's. The creature's face looked like an eagle's, and ram's horns sprouted from its skull. It's eyes were frightening, black scleras with golden irises, and pupils contracted to pinpoints. It was gigantic compared to Shayla, how was she supposed to charge into battle and expect to beat it?

Opal panicked, "Oh, yikes, of all the times for a stranger to show up! Please, you can't tell anyone my friend is getting involved with a Seer and an Alchemist, she doesn't try to break the law, she just doesn't want to see anyone die trying to fight those Dark Spirits, you know how they are, they're mindless monsters!" Obviously, she sounded guilty, she and Shayla had been caught doing something that was forbidden.

__________________________________________

Paul gritted his teeth as he saw the Dark Spirit pick up the kid again, he had told the guy to run, why had he just sat there gaping at him? He tightened his grip on his sword, when something charged in, and jumped up, sailing right into the Spirit's chest, and sending it flying to the ground, forcing it to drop the victim it had been holding for a second time. Suddenly, a second presence, not unlike the Dark Spirit's, but somehow less...heavy and malicious...became known to him, and it was even more powerful than the creature he had been fighting. He saw something the size of a regular human being crouched on the Dark Spirit's chest, but it didn't look human. It was a girl, but she had claws, fangs, and bright red eyes that seemed anything but human. Even at this distance, he thought he could hear breathing, laced with a snarl each time there was an exhale. This couldn't be a Dark Spirit, though, because he saw the kid he had been trying to rescue hunker down in terror, his gaze fixed on the girl. He could see her, Paul was sure of it, so if she wasn't a Dark Spirit, what was she.

The girl, the creature, whatever she was, glanced with her terrifying gaze between Paul and the kid, before plunging one claw deep into the Dark Spirit's chest, and then running forward, ripping from its heart up to the base of its chin, or beak. The Dark Spirit, defeated with that single move, went into death throes, and after twitching several times, dissipated into shadowy dust, which turned white, and finally, disappeared, the creature purifying upon its death into a regular spirit, and passing on into the afterlife. Saul didn't see any white orbs, which would have indicated if it had swallowed anyone else. It was strange that such a powerful Dark Spirit could have not gotten its strength by feeding on someone.

The girl landed back on the ground, and flexed the fingers of her bloodied claw, watching as the blood faded, as though it had never been on them. She looked up at Paul, and then at the kid who had been drawing the strange patterns. Finally, she settled on the kid, "Hey, Alchemist, next time you're drawing transmutation circles, make sure it's not where a Dark Spirit can show up and attack you. There isn't always going to be a Seer or a Demon around to save your sorry tail." She snapped at him, not yelling, but not being quiet, either.

The kid, or Alchemist, whatever he was, stared at the girl, "S-Seer? D-Demon? W-what was that thing? I was floating..." He stammered, completely shaken.

Paul slowly strode along the rooftop, "Hey, what do you mean by Demon? Is that what you are, and Alchemist?"

The girl looked from the kid up to Paul, "Yeah, you're a Seer, ain't ya? Demon, Fay, whatever you call it, that's what I am, and this guy here-" She pointed a finger at the young man, "-Is an Alchemist, why else would he be drawing transmutation circles? It's not like anyone else can use 'em."

"Pink."

"Aw..." Pink said, disappointed that her two little demon guests have decided to leave. But what they left for was something far more interesting than two demons. A dark spirit. A delicious, high level dark spirit. And it was aiming for this kid. Pink would have let it get it's grub on with the kid, then slay it herself so she can devour it. Unfortunately, one of her friends beat her to the cake. Pink had a puppy-dog face on as she watched the demon, the alchemist and the seer do battle with the dark spirit. If it was just one of them, then Pink would definitely have taken her chances, but she's restricted in this human form, and by the type she breaks her shackles, they would have already have already killed the spirit. But Seers are the kind of people that Pink naturally knew to avoid. They have weapons that could easily bypass her intangibility and the healing and durability of her true form. Thus, pissing one off would be a pretty stupid idea (Though, killing a few off would be a good idea). "Ah, you shouldn't worry," Pink energetically says to Opal, "I got no one to tell!"

But now, Pink was getting bored up here. All the action was over. It ended predictably. The dark spirit was defeated, and banished to where ever. Pink looked at Opal, a grin on her face that gave away that she had more to say, "But, I wouldn't interfere into other people's business if you're worried about breaking a law or two, m'kay? Saving one kid doesn't matter when there's probably... Idon'tknow... twenty more people on the other side of town that aren't going to be so lucky." Pink said this just to get a reaction out of the girl.

The cool night hair filled Sundara's hair and loose white tank top as she rode on her longboard. It didn't bother her any. The deserts of her home continent got much much colder in the dark hours. She didn't have any specific destination in mind, simply feeling the energy around her and letting her instincts dictate which turns to take. The lay of the town subconsciously ingrained enough that she always wound up back at her home. Expensive modern vernacular architecture, but humble in size. That might be an overstatement. One room and a bathroom. While she could have a mansion if she pleased, it was wasteful in her eyes. Especially for a single inhabitant.

Now long boards weren't design as much with tricks in mind, but that didn't keep people from learning how. Sundara was no exception. After a good push off she performed a kickflip around her boards horizontal axis. A design of a large stenciled eye with a desert sands background was briefly revealed to be on the underside. She landed it perfectly keeping her momentum going. If anyone was watching, they weren't supernatural, so she didn't care. If there were any near enough to see her she'd know. Going along a little further that changed. She stopped at a side street and looked father down. There was a several supernatural or she wouldn't have felt them from this distance. Unmistakably so, for one of them was had revealed their true form to combat a dark spirit. Sundara shook her head. The young have so much to learn. Everything was a balancing act in her eyes. Destroy one dark spirit and another will pop up somewhere else to take it's place. Were in any other way the world would be rid of them already.

Against her better judgment she gave into her curiosity. She'd seen several of the supernatural denizens of this place around before, but there were so many in one place at one time. So she reoriented her board and gave a good kick off in their direction. The one transformed likely was already alerted to her presence. Enhanced senses were common among her kind. The others would be shortly as her lone aura was picked up by their detection.

She skated right up to the one that was transformed, completely ignoring the others. "Impressive. Now contain yourself. Wouldn't want to get in any trouble, now would we?" The tone of her voice said her compliment was slightly sincere, of course her real interest was keeping her from foolishly exposing their kind to the humans.

Opal looked even more alarmed when the strange woman mentioned multiple people on the other sound. She gave a nervous, uneasy laugh, even though she kept smiling. "You can't be serious," She said, before the laughter tapered off, and she looked at the woman seriously, frowning a bit. "If you massacre that many humans, every Seer and Fay within miles will find out about it, and come after you. I'm just a Longma, devouring spirits isn't an ability I even have, but I know if you devour a large number of spirits, it'll attract a lot of negative attention you don't want." She looked around, "I can't order you around, though, so I don't have much of a say, but if I were you, I wouldn't do it." She looked back at the woman, "I'm going to go over and help my friend out, before she does something reckless and gets herself killed. That Seer and Alchemist that she's just helped out seem to fascinate her for some reason, she won't tell me why, though. I'm making sure through this whole crazy thing that she doesn't die at the hands of the very people she's trying to help."

With this, Opal ran along the rooftop, and jumped up, becoming enveloped in a white aura that momentarily hid her shape from view. When it vanished, what remained was a strange creature that could only be described as a combination of dragon and horse. An equine creature with iridescent white scales that shone like the stone Opal was named for, and curling horns that came from the base of the skull. Large bat-like wings sprouted from the back, and Opal took off, flying towards where Shayla was talking to the Alchemist and Seer. "Bye!" The Longma called back behind her, revealing sharp teeth in place of the flat ones typical of a horse.

As she turned back to look, she saw that another person had arrived. Yikes, and that Alchemist picked an alley because it was supposed to be secluded? Her day was just getting better and better.

________________________________________________

Shayla's nose picked up the scent of another demon, and she reacted, leaping away from the person and landing a further distance away, moving so swiftly she became a blur, almost impossible to see. She crouched down and looked at the stranger, baring her teeth, looking as though perhaps she had reacted with the first thought being that she was under attack. "These humans are a Seer and Alchemist," She said, suspicious, "A Seer already knows the supernatural when he sees it, and this Alchemist was under attack by a Dark Spirit already. He was bound to find out, eventually, even had I not interfered." She straightened, and the Barrier closed over her, her appearance returning to that of an average human teen. The transition was so quick that it took only a matter of seconds, expert control over the ability to pass through the Barrier at will.

She looked up at the Seer, then at the confused Alchemist, and finally, the person who had just shown up, before frowning, and folding her arms, "Well, this turned out to be a big mess." She muttered, before looking at Nicholas, "Hey, are you going to sit there and gape at us all night? You have to at least be curious, no sense with hiding the answers, now." She said.

At this time, a horse-like shape flew over and landed behind where the Seer was standing on one of the rooftops, and rapidly changed back into another teenage girl. The Seer whirled around to look at her, and took a few steps back, not making much noise, but regardless, seeming surprised to see her there. Shayla looked up at the girl, "Hey, Opal, think you can get that Seer to come down here without attracting any more attention than we already have? That's two more people than I wanted to find out about this."

Opal waved, "Uh, sure thing, Shayla!" She called back, sounding a bit doubtful.

Shayla turned back to the other demon, "Might as well clear things up, make life easier." She explained.

___________________________________________________________

Paul warily backed away from the girl, she had an odd aura about her that he wasn't quite familiar with, and it made him uneasy. "Clear up what?" He asked, suspicious, wondering if he could unnerve her enough to keep her from moving, so that he could get away.

The girl, 'Opal', folded her arms, "Well, the fact that you're seeing a ton of different creatures showing up and you don't know what they are. We've got no choice, now, but to explain all of this to you. We're too exposed out here to be talking about all this stuff out in the open. Shayla intended to just kill the Dark Spirit, and take you two to where we could explain without any sort of problems, but we wound up attracting more attention than we wanted. We need to get out of here."

Paul scowled behind his mask, "I don't believe that," He said.

Opal frowned, "Says the guy in the mask, you're a little suspicious yourself. I don't like Shayla pulling me into all of this, but she'll get herself killed if she didn't have somebody around to watch her back. Please, don't argue with me, I know all about what you are and what you do. Just come along with me and my friend, and we'll clear things up. The woman that just showed up wasn't supposed to notice all of this."

__________________________________________________

Nicholas looked up and saw the masked guy, or Seer, jump down from where he had been standing on the rooftops, catching himself expertly on small ledges on the buildings, and landing on the ground in the alley, perfectly unharmed. The girl who had appeared on the roof vanished, and appeared at the other end of the alley, walking up to stand next to the other girl who had suddenly changed to look human again.

Everyone stared at one another for a moment, before the Alchemist, steeling his nerve, slowly stood up. "If you're going to explain all of this, where are you taking us, if we're not talking here?" he asked. His voice became clearer as he finally worked up the courage to use it.

The auburn-haired girl looked over at him, "I have a friend who lives close by. He lets me hang out around his house, and if we get into situations like this one, he lets me bring people there so we have a safe place to talk about things."

The girl, Opal, looked around at everyone, "Okay, just follow us, we can walk there." She said.

She then looked at the demon woman who had just shown up, "Sorry about this, my friend is always doing crazy things. We'll get out of your hair."

About ten minutes or so later, Marshall was back outside unloading his trunk. With him, he brought a large suitcase, a brown leather briefcase, Amos and Navon's bed, and a metal box about three feet long. The suitcase contained clothes and a bottle of a fine French wine (for post-hunt enjoyment with a Cuban cigar). The briefcase was filled with books and age-old papers containing seals and sigils and their effects. The metal box contained Celsion, Marshall's prized possession. He rattled the metal box gently to make sure the sword was in it, and carried the suitcase and metal box into the house. He wouldn't dare open it out of fear of some supernatural creature discovering the legendary sword. Amos and Navon grabbed the briefcase in their mouth and lugged it inside. They plopped it on the couch and scampered back out of the door towards the dog bed. Marshall walked into his bedroom and placed both the sword and the suitcase on the bed. It was a small square room with dark walls and oak furniture. A heavy wooden writing desk sat in the corner of the room next to a tall skinny window overlooking the woods, and a white ceramic lamp on the nightstand provided most of the room's light. Marshall walked over to the matching floor lamp and tried to turn it on to no avail. "Damn lightbulbs" he muttered to himself as he grabbed the sword box. Now in safety, Marshall removed the chain around his neck and took from it a golden key. He unlocked the box with the key and opened it slowly to check on the sword. Seven hundred years and it still glittered in the light like it were brand new. Content, Marshall placed the sword back in the box, locked it, and placed it under the bed where it would be safe. The box was magically charmed so that it couldn't be opened without the key. Lock picks would shatter explosively on contact with the lock and it was nearly impervious to other modes of entry. Upon reassuring himself of the safety of his beloved sword, Marshall left the room and closed the door behind him. He walked out of the front door and to the car, where he slammed the trunk down and locked it with his car keys. He turned around and leaned on the back of the car for a moment, looking up at the night sky. It was certainly a beautiful evening. Stars twinkled like a million tiny candles and the silver light of the full moon cast shadows down upon the earth like the ghost of the long-dead sun. He stared up at the moon for a few moments, as if he were trying to see a face in the various lunar craters and maria. He saw a frown at first, and then what appeared to be a chicken made out of several craters.

---

At approximately ten-twenty-three, Ramses the pharaoh (the breed of dog) walked across the beige carpet of Apep's two story single family house over to an antique oak rocking chair sitting by the empty fireplace. The room was cross-shaped roughly, with dark tan walls the color of desert sand, decorated with various antiques and paintings. Above the mantle hung an old Turkish shamshir with some odd symbols carved into the hilt. From the walls hung a variety of old artifacts, most of them weapons, making the place look like a museum. One spot on the wall held three different guns: a 18th century British musket, a Winchester breach-loading rifle, and a wood-paneled AK-47. All of them were in various stares of wear. Another spot contained a badly-rusted Medieval Rondache. Yet a third spot contained four pistols; a 15th century Italian flintlock pistol, an 18th century British wheel-lock pistol, a Colt Patterson, and a Welrod pistol. All of the weapons on the wall (there were a few others) seemed like they would no longer work (ie he won't be using any of them).

The dog nudged a hand that hung from the side of the rocking chair limply, and its owner flinched. Apep slowly rose from his slumber and nearly fell out of the rocking chair. He looked at the antique grandfather clock across the room from him and cursed under his breath. Ramses whined and Apep pet the dog on the head gently, a quaint smile on his face. He took two steps and cursed audibly as his right knee locked up. Using the wall as a brace, Apep moved his way to his bedroom door on the end of the second arm of the cross-shaped room. The bedroom was roughly rectangular, 15 feet by 12 feet, and was similarly decorated to the rest of the house. The walls were dark tan and the carpet beige. The tan sheets on his bed laid neatly without a single crease on them. Hanging opposite his bed was a large mirror, next to which hung a rusted 16th century Italian rapier. A bookshelf took up the entirety of one wall (save a window) and contained easily a hundred books written in around six different languages. Some of them looked extremely old. Apep walked past the treasure trove of tomes and antique weapons to a black cane that rested against the wall. He absolutely hated the cane, but it took some of the pressure off of his knee and he didn't have the time to run to the pharmacy and pick up another bottle of his arthritis medication. He walked out of the room much abler than when he went in and walked to a set of hooks next to the door, where Ramses' black leash hung. He clipped the leash to Ramses collar and threw open the heavy oak front door, embracing the crystal clear night.

"Let's go boy." he said, pushing the black screen door open. Ramses filed out of the house and Apep closed the door behind him. Together they began to walk into the night.

Sundara

Sundara shook her head. "That may be so. Doesn't mean it's wise. I can't tell by your form which calling you've chosen, but know that you may be educating future enemies." Or worse. My future enemies. She's already made such a scene I could put some of them down and pin it on her... She stopped herself. She was one of the oldest Demons in town, what did she have to fear? Besides that would be a cowards play. They interfere and she'll deal with them then. "Wasn't supposed to notice? Clearly your new at this. Somebody always notices. Go on. Take your pets and leave before a human does." Once the barrier falls things will be much simpler. To roam the world in my true and glorious form, fix all the corruption. What she was referring to is a mass cleansing of those who fall outside her ideals. Her didn't have a cap that she knew of, and without any restrictions she could attain untold levels of power. As they group of younglings departed, she noted somebody watching from a distance away. Looks like they did draw the attention of a mortal. She was dressed in all black, with long hair tied back with two red ribbons.

Sundara had been here long enough to know who it was. None other than the towns most pitted, a poor girl named Emily. It wasn't as bad as she thought, surely nobody would believe a druggie. That's if she even decided to say anything about it at all. There was a strange air about her though. The girl started towards them as if in a trance. This was unexpected to say the least. Never had she seen her up close, and it really was a sad sight. Her blood began to boil, not at her though. Everyone knew about Mr. Shelton's drinking habit, how he drove away his wife, and her mother. He hadn't been sighted for over a month now, not that anyone cared. If he had choked on his own vomit nobody would find out anytime soon. Then suddenly as she approached twenty feet away she could feel an overwhelming aura unlike anything she had every experienced. It seemed to be coming from multiple places inside her body. The only thing she could say about it is that it was wrong. More twisted than the most depraved demon she'd ever met, and he was a real work of art. What are you? She wondered.

Morbus and Emily

The parasite Morbus watched the transgression through Emily's obscured vision. Move your damned hair out of the way girl! He roared internally. Now wasn't the time to reveal himself. If it weren't for the one that transformed he'd have been none the wiser. His senses were constrained while his host was in control. Then his worst fear started to become a reality. No, stop! She was approaching the group, and this was too premature for his tastes. In an attempt to stop her, he made everyone look like monsters out of a horror movie. Red eyes, claws dripping with blood. If anything it made her speed up. Blast. Next he played static in her ears that increased in volume the closer she got. It did nothing to slow her down. All he could do now was prepare for the worst.

Ever since she stopped being able to sleep, Emily roamed the town by day and night. Not even drugs could take away the constant pain she now felt. Cutting herself no longer worked as a distraction. Not only was it harder than ever to do so, but she didn't feel a thing. There wasn't even blood, and wounds closed up soon afterwards. Her existence was a living hell with no escape. Tonight was no different. Until she caught sight of movement out of the corner of her eye. Somebody dashing along rooftops? Anything out of the she welcomed, thus she followed. He stopped at an alleyway, people were already there, and others soon emerged from the shadows. Some sort of gang meeting? No... The ones on the rooftop were clearly watching the ones bellow. Before she could come up with another explanation one of them was lifted in the air by some invisible force. Following one of the girls above turned into some sort of monster. Emily rubbed her eyes and smacked the side of her face to make sure it wasn't a hallucination.

If it was it was awfully real, and she couldn't shake it. She didn't move a muscle until she turned back into a human, and left with most of the others. Did I just see that? Against her better judgement she gave into curiosity and walked towards them. That's when she started seeing things. All it did is make her want to get there faster. She was beginning to notice a trend with her visions. It can't be. How could I only get them when doing certain things? Like she was doing something she wasn't supposed to. Then a sound like when the television wasn't on a station hit her ears. When she had a television. Now she was convinced it couldn't be a coincidence. She stopped before those that remained and simply stared. The pupils in her eyes unnaturally wide. Hopefully one of them would catch on that she'd seen all of that and say something.

"Pink"

In response to Opal's speech about this and that is a bad idea; Pink simply laughed in her face like she was a moron.

Laying waste to humans was definitely not what Pink was talking about. She was talking about letting things play out, you know? Let natural selection take place. What is a human life? A inferior creature unsuited for surviving in the world. Just look at your friend and those kids. A demon had to save them from something they couldn't handle. Pink gave Opal an impish grin. What makes this even more humorous is that your friend choose to save them. For what? Nothing? I would have at least consumed the dark spirit. Pink said not a word to Opal, instead kept laughing. But it was soooo hard not taking the brat down a few notches. "With little amateurs like them running around," Pink said, running her hands through her pink hair, "I'll take my chances. Bye!" Pink watched as the girl transformed into a mythical beast. A Longma, just as she said. Meh. With being this afraid of breaking a few laws and getting revealed; why the hell would she transform like this for no reason at all? The woman was muddled, and needs to drop that sense of morality if she's going to survive in this world. She continued watching them as they left. Perched on the rooftop. She wondered if she should follow them.... Actually, that'd be easier than it sounds.

Unlike Opal and her little demon friend, Pink can use a little bit of subtly with her demonic gifts. Pink's body puffed up, and liquidized slowly. She transformed into a cloud of mist, capable of flight, intangibility, among a sneaky pursuit. All she has to do to stay out of the range of their supernatural detection... They have a Seer, right? That could pose a challenge. Hmph. Their lack of subtly actually helps in this situation.

PostSubject: Re: .::Bind::. (IC) A Square Peg and a Round Hole   .::Bind::. (IC) A Square Peg and a Round Hole EmptySat Mar 29, 2014 3:29 am

As the group of four, two supernatural beings, and two humans, departed from the scene, a shape emerged out of the shadows, as though it had belonged to them. An aura that had been so expertly masked, that the one it belonged to might as well have been nonexistent, flickered to life. It was distinctly human, and the aura of a Seer, a very high-level one, at that. What one would notice about it, however, was that this aura didn't have a light, shining quality to it, like one would expect. The aura was incredibly dense and heavy, so much that it felt almost suffocating, and it had a dark, malignant quality to it that made the entire thing seem twisted and wrong. If it were not for the quality that identified the energy as human, it would have been mistaken for a very powerful demon, instead. The Seer was dressed in black clothing that wouldn't draw any attention, a black hooded jacket, dark jeans, black boots that were hidden under the jeans, even black gloves that covered the hands. What was distinct, however, was that there was a quiver strapped to his back, filled with arrows, and a bow in his hand made out of some material that nobody could determine, though it, too, was black. A sharp, angular face with incredibly pale skin peered out from underneath the hood, that of a teen. The narrowed, dark eyes, however, had a ferocious glint to them, and somehow, seemed older than his age. The Seer looked as a strange demon arrived, and as one left, attempting to follow the group.

Couldn't have that, now could he?

The Seer pulled a flat black stone out of his pocket, and the stone had a seal scribed in it. He hovered his other palm over the stone, and the seal shined with black energy, as its intended function began to work. The Seal's function was simple, suppress the energy of Demons and Fay, and force them back into their neutral forms. Whatever form a demon took, it would have to turn back into a human, or whatever it was when it wasn't using its power. It was a highly advanced seal, and as of yet, this young Seer was the only one capable of using it. Nobody else could, and he wasn't about to go into details about how powerful and advanced the Seer needed to be. The stone would only work once, though, so when the seal finished its work, the stone cracked apart and crumbled to dust in his hands. He tipped his cupped hand, letting the dust blow away.

He slowly made his way over to where everyone was, pulling another object out of his other pocket. It was a black metal pin or badge of some sort. It had a simple shape graved into it, a circle cut perfectly in half, one side left alone, and the other darkened. In the center of the circle, though, there was a distortion, as though the two sides were pouring into each other, and mixing. The Seer made a small smile, one that didn't show the teeth, although one almost expected that if he did, they would see a pair of fangs. "It has come to my attention that there seems to be several demons with too much time on their hands, and nothing to do with it." He said, his dark eyes glittering, "So, I figured, why not talk to them? Perhaps the organization I work for might be interested in making them an offer. That is, if you are tired of having to hide in the shadows, versus living in the world as you truly are. Besides, surely there is something more interesting than following a few Supernatural and Human beings that squander their potential, and remain ignorant of what they could truly do with the power they possess."

The Seer pulled off his hood, to reveal a head full of medium-length flaxen blonde hair, which was done in a choppy, very messy style. He held up his badge so everyone would see, "Allow me to introduce myself. Cody Louis, agent of the Combine, at your service." As he spoke, there was a flicker behind him, as two shapes emerged out of the building he stood next to. Judging by their energy, it was immediately clear that they were dark spirits. One had the appearance of a gigantic black and orange upright poison dart frog, somewhat larger than a human, with glaring red eyes and sharp fangs poking from its mouth. The other spirit, looked like a kind of humanoid thorny lizard, with red and yellow scales, and black scleras with red irises. They took up a position on either side of Cody, and made no sound. For whatever reason, these Dark Spirits, creatures normally known for being out of control, rampaging beasts, looked a bit like bodyguards or associates. This was completely new to everyone who saw, they never saw Dark Spirits act this way before.

Everyone got the distinct feeling that whatever they did in response to this 'Cody' and his appearance, they didn't want to get into a fight. What they sensed about his aura told them that he was perhaps the most powerful Seer they had ever encountered, or could hope to meet, and the malignant nature of his energy suggested that what he could do if he was crossed, wasn't very nice.

___________________________________________________________

During the entire walk the group took to get to Shayla's home, there was a lingering aura of tension hanging about them. Nicholas, feeling as though he were being left out of some sort of loop, had asked multiple questions, and gotten incredibly vague answers, being repeatedly told he would find out when they got to their destination. The answers didn't satisfy, but after Shayla seemed prepared to snap at him again, he fell silent, and took to glancing between the strange demon-girl, and the Seer behind him, who had tried to slow down and stay at the very back of the group, but always wound up walking too fast to stay behind Opal, who brought up the rear. It seemed that the girls were watching to see if any of them would try to bolt. As far as anyone could tell, the Seer hadn't spoken a word, neither to introduce himself, and he hadn't removed his mask, either.

Eventually, they all came into a more suburban area, and to the front of a house that seemed to kind of stand by itself compared to other homes in the neighborhood. It was a large red brick one with two stories, but it was separated from the rest of the world by a very tall matching red brick wall that must have been around nine feet tall, with what looked like cast iron spikes jutting out from the very top. There was a wrought-iron gate that separated the sidewalk from the paved brick pathway leading to the front door, and through the gate, there was a thick green lawn growing. A mix of pink and yellow cone flowers grew from the flower beds, which were sectioned off from the rest of the yard by a simple line of stacked bricks that had been arranged carefully. There was a large wrought-iron toad with green glass eyes sitting among the flowers, staring at the gate. The front door, which was under small covered front porch, was made out of mercury glass traced with swirling floral patterns, set in a pale brown-painted frame. The windows had a cheery yellow light coming from them, and had shutters that matched the color of the door frame on either side. Window boxes set below the windows on the bottom floor contained purple, white, and yellow pansies, carefully grown. Overall, despite the intimidating fortifications, the house looked rather cheery and inviting.

"We're here," Shayla said, as she pushed on the gate and it swung wide open, going inward. She then led everyone inside, and once they were within the confines of the walls, closed the gate back, and locked it, versus leaving it open like it had been. "Okay, first thing's first, my friend lets me stay here a lot, so he leaves the gate open for me so I can get back home. Once the gate's locked from the inside, though, no demon or spirit can get through, and the energy of everyone here gets masked. Place is warded big time, it's our home base, the only place were you can be in your true form and not worry about getting caught." She said.

She then led everyone over to the door, and knocked. Everyone heard a male voice coming from inside, "Coming!"

Someone walked up to the door, and opened it, and Nicholas immediately took a step back, allowing room for the very tall young man who came to greet them to step onto the porch, ducking a bit to get under the door. The young man looked at the Seer, and then at Nicholas, before frowning, though his eyes remained kind and gentle. "Ah, Shayla, so who have you dragged to my abode this time?" He asked. He didn't wait for an answer, "Well, come in, I suppose there is explaining to do. I have left over stew from dinner, if anyone is hungry." He ducked and went inside, and then beckoned for everyone to follow him inside.

Sundara

The other demon that wasn't part of the group had effectively disappeared, though she could still pinpoint her location with her supernatural detection. For whatever reason she was following the inexperienced group that had just left, leaving her with this girl, who wasn't what she seemed. Questions filled her mind, like how such a fragile form could house something with the full energy of a powerful demon? It was clear that Emily wasn't going to say anything, so she decided to make the first move. How to go about this? She opened her mouth, but quickly shut it as another aura came from seemingly nowhere. What's this? A dark seer? Like her kind was defined as Demon or Fay by their actions, the same held true for others who made use of spiritual powers. In her many years she'd seen one before, but not of this power level. He pulled out a seal and it felt as though she was being shackled into her human form. The other demon heading out was forced out of demon form and back down to earth. However, Emily's aura didn't change what soever. This made her uneasy. Either she wasn't confined by the barrier, or wasn't a demon at all. Maybe both.

When he spoke, what he said was true. If he was an agent of the Combine she might just be interested. "Go on. I'm listening." Then two dark spirits took places at either side of him. Sundara tensed, but they seemed to be docile so she loosened up. After a thousand years and I can still be surprised. This Cody definitely had her attention, and her utmost respect.

Morbus and Emily

There was no turning back now, so Morbus stopped messing with Emily's senses. She was predictable silent, waiting for the woman to say something first. Something troubled her, if a different way than the norm. The parasite knew exactly what was up. She was detecting his power inside her body and feeling nervous. Rightfully so. He was not a demon, but he could stand two to toe with even the most powerful of them. When he was in control that is. Until then all they'd find is that this girl is one hell of a punching bag. Right when it looked like skater-ish demon was going to speak, another joined them. A seer by the looks of his aura, however a powerful and twisted one. Now Morbus had never seen a corrupt member of their kind, it only made sense that they existed though. He did something with a seal, what exactly he had no idea.

First somebody turns into a monster, then some evil looking dude appears from nowhere. A while back this could have been a very lucid dream, except she hasn't been able to, not felt the need to sleep for months. This was real. What did this mean? Did it have anything to do with what was happening to her? Demons? Only one way to find out. "Um... sir..." She didn't know what else to call him. "I don't understand... is that what the monster girl that just left is?" Her voice was filled with doubt and uncertainty. A normal person would have ran off, Emily wasn't normal. The worse thing that what would happen is they'd kill her from not being one of them, and that was a fate that she embraced with open arms. Lacking any prior experiences with the supernatural she was totally obvious to the dark spirits that joined him.

Morbus sent a telepathic message to Cody. "I speak for the girl, she's clueless in all of this. What do you want of us?" His voice was conveyed as being ghoulish and raspy. He didn't particularly care for the Combine cause, he'd only hear him out if there was something to gain. If he was planning on using force surely his own energy would at least deter him. Even with the two dark spirits, who were surprisingly calm. "Are those your pets?" he added in an almost mocking tone.

It just so happened that as Cody and his walls of meat appeared in the middle of the alley, a rooster moseyed in. It looked around curiously at the two reptilian spirits next to Cody and then at the hunter himself. Benedict listened to what Cody said with interest, as it could understand English, but not speak it very well. The rooster looked around the alley and saw that there were no mortal onlookers. The only other people in the alley seemed to be the demons who Cody had now trapped with his seal. Feeling comfortable, Benedict decided to transform. Its legs began to sprout from under it to the size of ostrich legs, and its body grew to accommodate the large legs. A massive snakelike tail seemed to roll out from Benedict's behind, and its neck greatly increased in length. Its head transformed into that of a snake's, though the red crest remained. Its wings became much larger, and it experimentally stretched them out wide as it cracked its neck. The red rooster feathers on its body, tail, and head transformed into dark green scales. Benedict now stood as a full cockatrice, its head nine feet in the air. It let out a raptor like screech, though a moment or two later regretted it for it could draw onlookers. Benedict looked down at Cody with interest and addressed him in Latin.

"Vestibulum commodo. Nunquam ante viderim haec agunt,." he said "Ignosce mihi, non Latine loqui, sed intellegere non possum. Plurimum debes videntem. Dic mihi, quid est "Combined" dicas?"

Translation: <<Interesting. I've never before seen spirits act this way. Forgive me, I cannot speak English, but understand it. You must be a very powerful seer. Tell me, what is this "Combined" you speak of?>>

---

Not far from the scene, Apep heard an odd screeching noise pierce the air. He knew it from somewhere, but could not be sure of its origin. Whatever it was, it sounded dangerous and supernatural. He looked over at Ramses as the dog lifted its leg and urinated on some hydrangeas planted under a mailbox. That's one way to water your garden. Apep shrugged and began to walk down the street towards the alley where he heard the squawk emanate from, Ramses following him close behind. If there was anything bad or unsavory in that alley, Apep knew he could kill it with his demon form. As he approached the alley, though, he felt something odd overtake him. He could no longer feel the veil around him. It was almost as if it had disappeared in itself. Apep stopped for a moment and felt his pocket. He still had his pocket knife with him, and while it wouldn't do much to most creatures, he'd still be able to wound any demons. He walked forwards and turned into the alleyway just as Benedict finished speaking. A seer with a black bow was speaking to a group of demons and a cockatrice, the source of the squawk. Benedict looked down at Apep, and he lowered his eyes, knowing of the creature's power. The monsters on either side of Cody perplexed Apep. It appeared as if they were dark spirits, but he had never seen them so contained before. This seer seemed to have complete control over them.

"What in God's name..." Apep whispered, his voice rising to normal volume as he spoke "is going on here?" He was fairly certain that he recognized one of the demons present, but would address them after he figured out what this seer was all about.

Cody slowly raised one palm, "All questions will be answered in due course. First, allow me to explain who I am more properly, and what goals the organization I work for has set for its members. I assure you, it will not only be worth your while, but you may also find that there are many benefits if you decide on working with us." He said, his tone polite, but also giving the impression of a charming wolf ready to devour an unassuming lamb. He turned to the Cockatrice, first, "You need not worry, I can understand Latin fluently."

Having finished with the generic introductions and assurances, Cody slowly gestured to the two Dark Spirits with him, "As you are aware, Dark Spirits, such as these two I have in my company at present, are normally highly aggressive, mindless beasts, and their first instinct is to kill, and devour any spirit that they can find, to fill the void that was left by the loss of their hearts, a terrible condition that results when they refuse to pass onto the afterlife, and linger for too long on Earth, which results in them being completely transformed by negative spiritual energy or emotions. For one such as myself, I have discovered a way to control them, and although they need to be carefully instructed, they are far more useful when their strength is guided by a sharp mind. Since learning the secret, I have managed to extend my control over quite a large number of these creatures. The first advantage that I will mention right from the start, before I get to the actual goal of the Combine, is that I have the capability to lend you a few of my subordinates, if you decide that you need them for something, and I do not quite mind if whatever activities you need them for happen to be illegal, or dangerous for them. I actually think they couldn't care less, considering they never stopped fighting when they were in danger before." As Cody spoke, the Dark Spirits with him made no sort of motion or expression suggesting they were offended by a single word he said. They didn't even seem to be hearing the conversation.

Cody continued, "Now, with that being out of the way, allow me to tell you the true purpose of why I am here. The Combine, to simply put it, is an organization devoted to the goal and concept of uniting the supernatural and human worlds, eliminating the Barrier, and all that keeps beings from either world apart." He paused, allowing this fact to sink in, "Now, before you dismiss the idea, as I am aware many supernatural and human beings alike have been taught the Barrier is useful, think of what life would be like if it weren't there. Demons and Fay, Mythical Creatures as well, could walk among humans without being forced to take on disguises, which are pathetic and plain, compared to the magnificence that they truly are. Those that are truly great, and deserve respect, will have the glory they deserve, no more will the inhabitants of the supernatural world be forced to walk on the fringes of society, when they could do so much more for Earth if their true potential was achieved."

He then folded his arms, "As for one such as myself, I grow tired of the laws that claim I cannot speak to the supernatural, or other humans that do not know of my power. I am weary of the silence that has been forced upon me by the law, and so are many others. Alchemists wish for their science to be made known to the world, and Seers, the wonderful gifts they have. Meta-humans find that they could learn so much if they were able to interact with those that had gifts similar to theirs. Here are three groups with limitless potential, wasted because of the Barrier and its rules." He glanced between the members of the group, "There are also the Chimeras, the poor, pitiful creatures created by the fusions of different creatures. We have stumbled across multiple of their kind, transmuted with live humans, so that they are intelligent beings in their own way. Pity them, for the only way they can truly belong in the world is if the norm is to see creatures such as them."

He paused, "With all of this in mind, the Combine has gained many members in recent years, and has power beyond your wildest expectations, though you will not find a Seer that surpasses me yet. If you seek power, and the right to live as what you truly are, then my organization is a perfect fit for you."

Morgyn sighed as she walked home wearily, a soccer ball under her right arm and her left swinging in pace with her steps. Strands of hair that had become loose from her ponytail swayed from side-to-side with her steps, as well- a constant, steady rhythm that followed her walking pace. Her black Nike backpack that had pink accents to it was hanging by one strap on her left shoulder. She wore a white t-shirt that had a random sports team's logo on it that held a royal blue color. She also wore some black Nike shorts (It's FINALLY warm enough for shorts with the spring weather!) that stopped just above her fingertips and had blue stripes going down the sides of the article of clothing.  She wore a pair of plain Puma shoes on her feet and hot pink ankle socks.

Morgyn had over-all enjoyed the first day back from spring break. She had spent the school day talking with friends and catching up on the latest gossip- it was amazing how much could happen in a few days! Basically she had done the normal, teenage thing.  After school was pretty enjoyable, as well. Morgyn had first hung out with a few friends, then spent some time at an empty lot, playing soccer with a couple of random people. If it weren't for the secluded location of the town and thus the lack of any sports teams to join, Morgyn would probably be in several sports. However, the Edgehollow High didn't have any sports teams available so she had to just go with the next best thing and play with friends. It worked out, though playing sports that way wasn't as fun as being on an actual sports team with everyone watching and cheering you on.

Anyway, after spending the afternoon goofing off and exercising, Morgyn was tired and ready to get home. Her feet were sore from the constant running that they had participated in that afternoon, and they needed a bit of a rest.

Morgyn's pace slowed as she neared her house- a simple two story home that had a garden in the front, filled with flowers that were only just beginning to bloom in the spring air. The lights were on in the house, welcoming her. The lights were a sign that her parents were still up, probably discussing some random, boring subject like politics. Bleh. They probably weren't waiting up for her, however. It wasn't that her parents disliked her- in fact, it was the exact opposite. It's just that they had made a deal- Morgyn had a curfew, and all she had to do was make it home before then. If she were going to be late, she would have to call and explain that and the reason for her tardiness to them.  If there were a problem, well, cell phones were invented for a reason. Though she doubted such an instance would occur. If some guy ever tried to mug her, Morgyn just figured she could use it. Her special power.

Morgyn wasn't sure how or why she had the power, but she knew it was useful- the ability to direct eyes. She could either make someone look at her or not look at her. Simple, really. So if a guy tried to mug her, she figured she could just use her special power to make him not look at her and then run as fast as her feet could carry her. Of course, this didn't mean she was going to not be wary of some people- there were ways to get around her power, after all-  but it did mean that Morgyn felt a bit safer than most people out in the streets.

Morgyn slowed to a stop as she passed a certain house on a hill upon seeing someone outside, leaning against his truck. A new neighbor? She looked at him curiously before smiling. She should greet him and welcome him here.

Morgyn seemed more awake suddenly as she walked up to Marshall, taking a moment to look up at the night sky, as well, upon seeing that he was doing it. "Good evening," she politely greeted, before switching to a more casual greeting. "What's up?"

Apparently, since nobody had bothered to eat dinner at their own homes before setting out on their night-time escapades, three out of the four people who arrived at the home of Shayla's friend wound up eating leftover stew. Paul, on the other hand, refused to eat, which would involve removing his mask and showing everyone what his face looked like. Perhaps he could be identified by his aura, but the chances were that the people in the room hadn't seen him without his uniform as a Seer. Overall, he also didn't think he could hold down what was offered. It wasn't the stew, in fact, it both looked and smelled delicious, and everyone seemed to like it, but Paul was too unnerved to feel like eating, anyway. There were five people in the dining room, and only two of them were humans. Two of the people in the room gave off an aura that made Paul think of a Dark Spirit, except there was something less malicious about their energy. There was another one that gave off a different aura, and the nature of it felt incredibly alien, it didn't strike him as anything familiar. Paul was also realizing that the only other human in the room besides him apparently had some sort of ability or identity that was just as unusual as being a Seer was.

The fact was, everyone was incredibly silent as they all sat around the dining room table. It wasn't the environment, or even the food, that caused them to be so quiet. They situation itself was simply so strange and uneasy that nobody felt like speaking. Tension filled a room that had been decorated with every intention of being warm and inviting, with a special touch that gave it its own sense of charm. Paul also noted that it was strange, because as far as he could tell, their host, who had identified himself as something called a Fay, named Blake, was probably only either eighteen or nineteen years old, judging by his looks. Most people around that age; Paul doubted that they could afford most of the items or furniture in Blake's home, not including the home itself, which Paul imagined cost very much, with its wrought iron gates and nine-foot-high brick walls that kept it isolated from the rest of the neighborhood. It didn't make much sense to him, but he wasn't going to start talking, and put himself in a position where people felt at liberty to ask him questions.

Thinking, Paul took to scanning the room he was in, while he sat in his chair at the table, nothing in front of him. The room itself was what he would have considered to be the perfect size; it wasn't so small that it felt claustrophobic, and it wasn't so large that it felt like there was too much open or empty space, either. Everyone had ample room to move around, so it was quite comfortable. The floors of what appeared to be most of the house were hardwood, cut into long, wide planks, to display the quality of the wooden material used. It appeared that the floors were black walnut, a very dark, richly colored wood that contrasted nicely with the pale cream color that most of the walls had been painted with. The walls themselves had been plastered for the sole purpose of creating texture, and the work had been carefully done so that there wasn't any evidence of what kind of spade or tool was used to apply it. The whole room was tied together by moldings that matched the floor, black walnut floor molding that was simple in shape and design, and then at the top of the walls, there was crown molding with sweeping edges and designs. Paul noted that despite the woodwork being well cared-for, it looked incredibly old. Looking up, Paul saw that hanging over the table was a chandelier of wrought-iron, which by now seemed to be very common in Blake's home.

While most of the materials used in the actual structure of the house appeared to have come from America, a lot of the furniture looked like it was imported, either from Europe or perhaps even Africa. The table they ate from consisted of a frame of wrought iron, done in a simple design of spirals. The main table top was a single large rectangular slab of granite, which was mottled with larger patches of grey, black, and white. There were small flecks of clear quartz, as well as bits of some other mineral that had a golden color, and reflected light. The chairs they sat in were meant to go with the table, wrought-iron frames, but with seat cushions that could be swapped out. Swirls of red, white, and black decorated them currently. Two candle-holders were set on the table, meant to handle tall, thin candles. They were long and drawn out, and appeared to be made from mercury glass, adding a touch of silver to the room's overall decor. There was also a centerpiece meant to hold a medium-height candle that was fatter in appearance. The table lamp was of a dark, iron-like metal, square, and done in a Moroccan style, a cage with ornate panels.

Behind Paul there was the archway entrance to the living room, which they had come through, and to the right was a large archway built into the design of the house that led into the kitchen. Paul had also noted that many authentic-looking paintings, though not from any artists he knew, hung on available walls, in well-chosen frames. He did think, however, that the paintings looked very old, and some of the styles reminded him of the art Edgehollow was known for. They might have come from the town, and had just been painted a very long time ago. Although there were several modern things, like a television and DVD set, reading seemed to be the most important thing, as Paul had counted at least three book cases in the living room, large ones packed completely with volumes for reading. Paul also noted that no matter where he looked, he didn't see a single indication of family, not a single photo. There also did not appear to be a telephone, either. Something told Paul that Blake didn't know many people, and that he preferred peace and quiet to social interaction. Indeed, for the most part, Blake had been silent since answering the door.

_______________________________________________________________________________

After a few moments passed, Blake heard a thump come from above him on the ceiling. Everyone looked up in the direction of the sound, but Blake didn't react, instead focusing on the local town newspaper that he had been reading. He did, however, wave one hand in acknowledgement, as he knew the source of the sound. This person had visited his home enough where he no longer had even the slightest twinge of doubt about where the noise came from. "Dixie, get down from there." He said, his tone completely calm. He could have said more, but as far as he could tell, the two humans were taking one shock after another. The Seer seemed to cope quite well with them, probably because he was used to seeing and fighting strange things on a regular basis, but even so, Blake could sense part of his mood through the Seer's aura, and he seemed on edge. The Alchemist, who had introduced himself as Nicholas Bryce, was the one who seemed the most off-balance from all the unusual phenomena, though he retained a polite, if not somewhat timid, manner about himself. The confusion and uneasiness permeated the boy's aura, and Blake couldn't help but feel bad for him, though comforting people was not his strong point, and so he didn't try.

Blake heard a feigned grumble of aggravation come from the ceiling, "Fine, Mr. Mane-and-Scales." A girl's voice said. Something dropped to the floor, rather lightly, judging by the sound, and someone quickly tugged the newspaper out of Blake's hand. He wasn't upset, though, it would take a lot to get Blake's temper to flare up. He looked calmly at the bird-like teen, who was so childish in overall physical appearance one would think she was years younger than she actually was, though she dressed as a mature girl her age should. She wasn't angry about the order Blake had given her, it was her natural sense of humor that made her exaggerate a word that would have sounded like moaning and groaning, in essence. Dixie was optimistic by nature, and in many ways, could have been compared to a puppy or kitten. She had that energetic, playful aura about her, and it seldom lost those qualities. She also suffered a short attention span, which meant that on many occasions it was difficult to get her to do something the first time she was asked.

Blake raised one eyebrow, an expression that was very dramatic, given the prominent nature of his brow, which made his hazel eyes even more noticeable. He appeared to be of European or more specifically Irish descent, as his eyes sometimes had flecks of green, and his hair was a dark auburn color, cut at medium length and parted down the middle, with the hair swept to either side, which was easily done, as it was naturally straight, yet thick. He wore a red and brown plaid shirt, with plain jeans, and large work-boots with steel toes, although this was just his personal preference. As Dixie had put it, he reminded her of a beardless lumberjack with his chosen attire. As a meta-human that knew Blake through Opal, and thus also knew about the existence of Demons and Fay, Dixie also knew what Blake looked like in his true form. She had met him when he was in his true form, and ever since, she had taken to calling him 'Mr. Mane-and-Scales'. She was probably the only one who could get away with calling him that without a reprimand, since she couldn't seem to remember his actual name, and his manner was more like a wise elder than a person who appeared to be his age. "I have asked you multiple times not to walk on my ceiling, Dixie." He said, his voice calm.

The two humans stared with confusion, while Shayla smirked at them for it. Opal got up and ran over, catching Dixie off-guard in a hug, "Hi, Dixie!" She cried, happy to see her friend.

Dixie stood there a moment, stunned, before returning the hug, "Bonum nocte!" She cried. At this, she let Opal go and took a step back, while half the room stared at her in confusion, unaware of what she said.

"What?" Opal asked.

Nicolas frowned, "She said 'Good Night', in Latin, but she messed up the pronunciation." He said.

Dixie looked at him, "Oh, yeah? How do you know?" She asked, although she didn't seem genuinely angry, she seemed to be feigning it again.

"Because, I speak it fluently, I'm an Alchemist, so learning it is important for my research. What exactly are you? Are you like Shayla and Opal? I really need some answers, I'm really getting confused, here. Dark Spirits, Demons, Fay? This is all new to me." He said.

Blake looked over at Nicholas, "There are multiple groups, some from the world of humans, some from the supernatural. You, the Seer, and Dixie are all from the human world. Creatures such as Shayla, Opal, and I are from the supernatural world. The human groups consist of Seers, Alchemists, like you, and Meta-Humans. You all have special powers that come from a place beyond the Supernatural world, and you developed them because you were exposed to energy that seeped into the human world. Creatures such as Demons and Fay, Mythical Creatures, and Spirits, come from the supernatural world entirely, we were born with our powers, and Spirits are those who died and have not yet passed on into the afterlife." He explained, trying to be detailed enough to provide the answer Nicholas was looking for, without drawing things out too much.

Nicholas frowned, "Okay, that makes a bit more sense, so, okay, I don't get it, what's the difference between Demons and Fay, since you keep mentioning them like they're the same thing, and Mythical Creatures?" He asked.

Shayla sighed, "You really are oblivious to the Barrier and the supernatural, aren't you?" She asked, though she didn't wait for an answer. "Well, I guess it's typical, you're just an Alchemist, detecting the other side isn't exactly your strong point, leave that to the Seers." She said her own personal explanation out loud for everyone to hear.

"Demons and Fay are in essence one and the same, they all have similar abilities, and in many ways, are just like Spirits, except that we have physical bodies. We're set apart from Mythical Creatures by several factors. One, is that we have spiritual power, and are affected by the seals and charms a Seer uses. What this means is that like a Dark Spirit, we have the power to devour spiritual energy, although devouring spirits is considered a crime among our kind. Demons, you could say, are kind of like criminals or monsters, they're the ones who break the law or do malicious things with their powers. Fay are those of our kind who follow the rules, and generally, we're the guardian spirits and good creatures you might hear of in your typical myth that don't belong to any groups already set up. We're the wildcards, you could say. We're generally more powerful than Mythical Creatures, but we can't use our power unless we're in our true forms. Otherwise, we're limited to sensing supernatural and seeing spirits, just like Seers. We're stronger, but we have more limitations." Shayla seemed to finish.

Nicholas frowned, "So why do people consider Demons to be scary creatures that look like you, and then things like Fay are harmless-looking?" he asked.

Shayla glanced up at him, folding her arms, "Because, first, Demons are scary, they're no laughing matter, and second, good creatures don't usually seem scary. Legends sometimes change the way things look, you need to account for that, first." She paused, "Secondly, raw instinct alone kind of started this whole problem of demons looking like horrific monsters. You know the drill, if it has square teeth, it's a plant-eater. If it's got fangs, it's something that hunts other creatures. A lot of creatures like me and Blake, here, who are characterized by the latter, with the scary looks, claws, fangs, and obvious traits you'd link to a predatory thing, are just generally more inclined to becoming Demons. Maybe because killing is something we all naturally feel like doing, or maybe we just have a deeper liking for the taste of spirits. Whatever the reason, we're made to kill stuff. That doesn't mean we all commit crimes, though. It's just that most of the friendly, guardian Fay you think of aren't made to hunt down prey."

Nicholas folded his hands and started drumming his fingers, "So, what about Mythical Creatures?"

Opal looked over at the Alchemist, "That's what I am. Mythical Creatures are your generic legends, unicorns, dragons, griffins, cockatrices, you name it, they're probably a part of that category. Like Demons and Fay, we wind up getting disguised by the Barrier, with a form that covers up what we actually look like. We aren't spiritual beings, so the seals a Seer use aren't going to affect us, and the fact is, because our powers aren't spiritual, we can use all our powers, even in human form. We're not like Demons and Fay, where if we're stuck in our disguises, we can't use our abilities aside from supernatural detection. We're usually not as powerful as a Demon or Fay, but we don't have as many weaknesses, either, and because we're supernatural, we can detect auras, just like Seers, though usually we're not as good at it as true spiritual creatures. We can't devour spirits, either, and our attacks usually aren't going to work like a Seer weapon, or the attacks of a Demon or Fay. We don't affect Dark Spirits as much if we have to fight them, although elemental attacks seem to work." She folded her arms, "Another thing, is that Mythical Creatures have more consistency than you'll find among Demons and Fay. We've got our groups, which is why we have specific names you can give us, and we'll all have similar appearances if we belong in that group. Demons and Fay don't have that sort of order. You can have a group of fire demons, but one could look like a dragon, and the other could look like an over-sized rat with three heads." She unfolded her arms, "For reference, I am a Longma, a kind of Dragon-Horse creature that originates from China. If you look at another Longma, you'll see something almost exactly like me in appearance."

Nicholas nodded, and looked over at Paul, "So what about Seers and Meta-Humans? What about Alchemists like me?"

For this question, Blake looked over at Nicholas, "You are all humans who gained unique powers because of exposure to a strange energy, call it magic, if you wish, that seeps over into your world from a place beyond the supernatural world. That energy sometimes takes root in humans, and gives them special gifts, though we can group them into three different factions. The first group, Seers, like you, Masked Man," He said, glancing at the Seer, who as of yet hadn't spoken or removed his mask, "Develop a heightened sensitivity to the supernatural. They first begin to see hazy blurs, and finally, they see the dead walking amongst the living, the spirits who have not passed on, and continue to roam the world, hidden by the Barrier. They also become aware of Dark Spirits, the spirits of the dead who have lingered for too long, and are warped into ferocious monsters by negative energy or emotions. Dark Spirits have lost their hearts, and are hollow inside, so they seek to devour high-energy souls to fill the void, they are beasts of raw instinct, and have no sense of reason. They pose a threat to Good Spirits, those that are still friendly and gentle, and they also pose a threat to the living as Spirits of any kind may interact with the physical world through touch, but cannot be detected by any other means. They have been known to devour the spirits of live humans." Blake paused, and looked to Opal.

Opal looked over at Nicholas, "You were attacked by a powerful Dark Spirit, Nicholas, and the Seer sensed it. He came in to kill it. A Seer has the power to create seals that have true spiritual power in them. They use the seals to ward their weapons, so that they have greater effect when used against spiritual beings. That also extends to Demons and Fay, like Shayla and Blake. The walls around this house have seals of that nature that create a sort of safe zone, things can't get through them, when the gate is closed." She glanced over at the Masked Man, "As for fighting and 'killing' Dark Spirits, they aren't actually destroyed. When a Dark Spirit is defeated, and not devoured, it purifies, and goes to whatever afterlife it belonged to, the crimes it committed after death are forgiven, because Dark Spirits cannot control themselves. It's generally the mission of a Seer to purify Dark Spirits, and get all spirits, in general, to pass on. It's not dangerous to help Good Spirits, but fighting Dark Spirits is incredibly risky, especially for a human, since humans are naturally fragile beings. Seers are unlucky in the sense that they tend to actually attract Dark Spirits towards themselves and those they have frequent contact with. Their spiritual power is much higher than an average humans, and Dark Spirits are attracted to that quality in a Seer, and to all the residual energy coming off of them that winds up floating around friends and family."

"What?" The Masked Seer cried.

"So, you can talk. I was starting to wonder." Shayla commented. "You didn't know that, did you? I suppose you didn't, since despite being a Seer, you've never met a supernatural being aside from spirits of the dead. Normally, a Seer can train himself to mask or lower the amount of spiritual energy he gives off, just like any supernatural being can, but you haven't met anyone to tell you that. I imagine a lot of your friends might be developing a sensitivity to the supernatural, with as much as you give off, since that's a side effect of prolonged exposure to a Seer's energy, though they won't ever be able to do the things you can. You have plenty of power, an abnormally high amount, in my own opinion, but you're an amateur, because you don't know how to use it."

The Seer glared at Shayla in anger, "Why didn't you say something?" He demanded.

"Because, you obviously didn't want to talk. If you want to mask your energy, you're going to have to learn it from me, and even then, it'll still be easy for people to pick up. It might lower the number of high-level Dark Spirits in town, though. You're lucky I brought you here, people can't sense anything beyond the walls around this house." She said, glaring back with equal, if not greater anger. "Don't treat me like a fool, I'm far older than you."

"By how much?" the Seer shot back.

"Try decades." Shayla said, the anger tapering off into a cool, collected look of indifference.

Everyone fell silent with this.

Apep listened attentively to Cody's little speech, his temper slowly rising as he did so. This kid had absolutely no idea whatsoever what he was doing. Benedict still looked on with interest. These ideas appealed to it greatly. If the barrier fell, it and its family would be able to run free without fear of persecution. By the time Cody was finished, a look of pure disbelief was affixed to Apep's face.

"That is the single most idiotic idea I have ever heard of in all my days." Apep replied, undertones of anger magnifying his voice "You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, kid. Do you have any idea what destroying the barrier would do? The moment that thing drops and all the demons and magical creatures lose their human forms, the human race in itself will declare war on us, a war that we cannot win." Ramses was growling silently now at Benedict. The dog lowered itself close to the ground and flashed the whites of his eyes, a threat in dog body language. The cockatrice ignored the dog, however, and simply listened to Cody silently. This idea sounded very appealing to him.

High above the scene on a wire strung between two telephone poles, a very large flock of crows was accumulating. This was increasingly odd, considering that crows sleep at night and are almost never completely silent, as they were now. In the middle of this flock of crows sat a much larger bird, a rather exotic-looking black raven. It looked down at Cody and the two blurry outlines next to him with a look of perplexion on his face. Just to the right of this large raven sat a smaller raven which towered over the crows and came to the exotic bird's neck. The larger raven turned to its smaller one, and squawked something that could only be understood by another bird.

"Corwin." the large raven said "I want you to fly down there and investigate. I am curious as to the nature of these visitors."

"Yes, Master Samael." the raven squawked back. It opened its wings up wide and fluttered down into the alley, where it landed on a dumpster next to where the cockatrice stood. The bird pecked at a piece of bread innocently, listening into the conversation. Whatever it discovered, it would relate back to its master above. Raven's were remarkably intelligent birds (this one particularly so), which was why Sam chose it to fly down as opposed to one of the inferior crows who had stomachs for brains and made enough ruckus to awaken the whole neighborhood.

---

Marshall was strangely compelled to look down at the teenaged girl who now approached him as if his eyes had been drawn to her. He wasn't sure why, but he knew from years of experience that anything odd that happened when a random stranger approached him was not usually good. He wouldn't just attack an innocent girl, of course, but he suddenly became very aware of where his knife was, tucked into an inside pocket of his jacket. He smiled and addressed the girl politely.

"Evenin'." he said, picking his words carefully "Nice night, isn't it?" Amos and Navon, meanwhile, had decided that they were tired. They walked into Marshall's room, bed in mouth, and placed it at the foot of his bed. They crawled into the dog bed and paced in circles several times in an attempt to assume a comfortable position. The dog(s) curled up and closed their eyes.

"Good night, Amos." Navon said.

"'Night, Nave." Amos replied.

This man seemed cautious of Morgyn whenever she approached- she wasn't sure why. Maybe he came from a city that had a really high crime rate or something? She shrugged off the thought. She shouldn't be wondering about that- if someone randomly approached her at night, she would be careful, as well.

Morgyn hadn't even realized that she had activated her power when she approached the man, but she suddenly realized she was upon feeling a small amount of her energy escape her. Whoops. She must have been a bit anxious about meeting this someone- though that isn't a surprise, considering she does normally feel excitement upon seeing someone new. Morgyn quickly stopped using her power- switching it off the way one does a light- before replying to Marshall.

"It is nice out," she nodded in agreement. Morgyn was quiet for a moment before finally saying, "Anyway, I'm Morgyn. I saw you had moved in and just wanted to be the first to say, you know, hi." She took a step back and switched her soccer ball from being under her right arm to her left and held out her now free right hand for a handshake, as she had been taught was the polite thing to do. "So it's nice to meet you."

Cody frowned slightly, and next to him, the lizard spirit began to growl ominously. He raised one hand and snapped his fingers sharply, and the growling stopped, though its eerie eyes still watched very closely. "Losing your temper will only make my subordinates stronger, if you intend to oppose the Combine. Dark Spirits feed on negative emotions, and the more you give off, the more powerful current ones become, and the more you create that weren't there before. Opposition, Support, we gain strength every day, either way." He said, slightly losing a bit of his formal speech. "I have more power than most, but they send me as a recruiter for that very reason. You are not the first to become angry and think I am a mere child, far from it." He reached into his pocket, and pulled out a metal chain, dangling with small flat charms like coins, and twined a part of it around his wrist. It had power in it, people could feel it the moment they saw it. "The reason they use me as a kind of poster boy, sir, is because the things I can do are born from the freedom to work with other groups aside from just other Seers. Demons and Fay, living much longer than humans such as myself, often pick up and memorize numerous seals, for the sole purpose of knowing when to be cautious. I was taught thousands of different seals in this manner. I learned secrets that no other Seer knows, and that is the source of my power."

He pinched one of the coins on the chain together, "There is a whole community you don't know of where humans and the supernatural live in harmony, right under your nose. It can be done, and even if I must become the likeness of a Dark Spirit to achieve such a goal, it is a worthy cause. To have the whole planet where the two worlds are one and the same." He stared at the chain, "Perhaps it is so difficult for you to grasp it, because you live in a divided world, but I was raised in such a community, and to me, your idea of keeping the Barrier is just as ridiculous." It seemed as though his personality had abruptly changed, making one wonder which one was real, and which one was fake, if that wasn't just some mental aspect of him that he didn't normally allow to show. The two different mannerisms had lapsed together almost perfectly. He let go of the part of the chain he had pinched. "I openly admit being malicious and threatening in nature, at times, but do you think that you can keep yourself from taking on characteristics of Dark Spirits, when you constantly control them, having to be inside of one's mind? I don't have an ulterior motive for what I'm doing, and even if I did, I don't have the power to change the Combine's plans. Nothing you say will change what my mission is."

"Well then, kid, I suggest you send your superiors this message." Apep retorted to the boy, almost spitting the word "kid" like a projectile "I have fought in wars for over nine hundred years, and if I've learned one thing in my time, it's that the real monsters out there are the ones who don't wear a disguise. While your community of hippies and tree-huggers may be able to live in relative peace with a few friendly monsters, most humans aren't like that. I've been around for a thousand years, kid, and I'll be the first to tell you that the world ain't populated with a bunch of CENSORED tree-huggers!" Apep lost his temper completely at this point, and he dropped his cane. His face flushed red, and his teeth seemed to sharpen. He wasn't concerned about this guy's bodyguards. Even in human form Apep could still spit magic copper, and this seal wouldn't last forever. "I've seen so many terrible, despicable things done by man in my time that you would never believe, boy! I've seen Mongols tear men limb from limb with horses! I've seen cannonballs tear torsos in two and burning hot tar sear men's skin off! I've seen artillery blow men into pieces so small and fine that nobody could ever identify the bodies! I've watched as men are chained and shoved on ships to be slaves to rich nobles who persecute and beat them until their skin falls off just because they're a different color! I've seen kamikaze pilots fly planes into the sides of warships and Japanese soldiers charge machine gunners with bayonets IN THE NAME OF HONOR!" Apep absolutely roared this last word, and then stopped for a moment to close his eyes and think. He took a deep breath or two, and the redness left his face. He regained his composure and then continued.

"Look, kid, I have lived and fought long enough to know that destroying the barrier would be catastrophic. If you do, there will be war and we will lose no matter how much magic bull**** you pull out of your ***. Humans are prejudiced and cruel, and that's the way it is. That's the way it's always been. The only thing lowering the barrier will do is get more people killed.

"Si inferioribus oppositis, tunc non amplius abscondere." Benedict replied "Qui ingredi poterimus possimus plateis."
<< "But if we lower the barrier, then we won't have to hide anymore. We will be able to walk the streets as who we really are.">>(google translate's latin sucks)

"Yeah?" Apep replied to the enormous snake "And what do you think the humans will do when they see you and your chicks lumbering down the street in a row?" he paused for dramatic effect, as if waiting for Benedict to answer "They'll grab their guns and open fire. The barrier's there for a reason. It keeps us safe from prejudiced humans."

"Lis et pellem, quam velles tuam abscondis, et ambulaverit foris pugnare ut qui vere sunt homines?" Benedict replied.
<<"So you'd rather hide in your skin suit than fight the humans and walk the streets as who you truly are?">>

"Yes I would." Apep spat back "because I've survived this long, and it'd be a real pain in the rear end if I got shot dead by the National Guard before I could finish enjoying my pension." The raven stayed around, and was now pecking at crumbs on the ground, still listening in. This combine idea seemed to be very odd. Hopefully his master would want no part in it.

---

"I'm Marshall." he said, shaking the girl's hand "Nice to meet you, Morgyn. I happen to be in town on some rather important business, but I figured that I'd take a few minutes just to admire the stars. It's a rare thing, you know, for men to simply enjoy the beauty and serenity of nature." he paused for a moment, and then chuckled quietly. "But you'd rather not hear the musings of an old man, now would you?" He laughed quietly and looked back up at the stars. Kids of this generation didn't have much respect for their elders, but Marshall couldn't blame them. He was just the same way when he was younger.

Cyril Noctis, Morgana Ogmer, & Leviatan "Pink."

Out of the blue, a poker card (A joker card), struck the ground in between Cody's legs, and firmly imbedded itself there. The card spontaneously combusted, and strangely enough, the card didn't burn away, instead it burned like a torch.

"Now, now, I do like stupid ideas every now and then...." A male voice said, as he made his approach accompanied by a red-haired female in a red dress. The pair made themselves known to the group as Cyril Noctis, the Gambler, and Morgana Ogmer, the Pumpkin Witch. Two people that aren't exactly citizens of the best behavior. They both were well-dressed, like they weren't the type who would hang around in dark alleyways with groups of weirdos. Cyril wore an ivory-white suit with a fedora and a red tie, and white gloves. Morgana wore a red versace cocktail dress.

Obviously, they were listening in on the conversation, and after a significant amount of conversation had passed, they decided to share their two cents. Cyril naturally did the talking, Morgana just stayed quiet, an off-putting grin on her face. Wagging his finger left and right, he spoke, "Let me give you two useful pieces of advice..." Cyril was being sarcastic as he always did. "... For starters, I would keep your mouth closed, you've just informed several potential enemies of some major information." Cyril then firmly planted his scepter onto the ground, and leaned on it. "Two, it doesn't matter to be whether or not that magical barrier stays up or down..." He started laughing a bit, "Actually it does. You'll be letting every bloody thirsty creature out of their cage, and don't get me wrong, I'm sure there's plenty of nice monsters out there; not everyone's going to play nice." Cyril pointed his scepter at Cody "Especially if you abruptly shatter the only thing keeping everyone nice and separate and expect everyone to instantly adapt to the change in the status quo."

Another voice came into the conversation, this time a bit spirit-sounding and demonic. "Oh! Don't be such a pooper, Noctis. A change in status quo is just what these humans need." A cloud of mist came into the sight of the group, then took a human shape. The shape was none other than Pink's human form. She stood away from the crowd, an amused smirk on her face. She looked at Apep, and pointed a thumb at him, "He's right." She said, giggling, "A war or two would definitely start between man and 'monster'. But that's not bad."

PostSubject: Re: .::Bind::. (IC) A Square Peg and a Round Hole   .::Bind::. (IC) A Square Peg and a Round Hole EmptySun Mar 30, 2014 9:59 pm

Cody's expression suddenly went dark, "And you think you can frighten me, or those above me?" He asked. As he spoke, his aura seemed to almost double in power, and grew so dense that it felt like a physical thing, smothering and heavy, and incredibly dark. On either side of him, the two Dark Spirits bared their teeth and snarled, it seemed as though their strength was increasing as well. "I am a Dark Seer, the more aggressive you are towards me, the less friendly I will be towards you. I suggest you calm down, and cease the profane language, before you cause me to lose focus. If so, the many Dark Spirits I have gathered about around us will attack you, they are masked and hidden, and numbers will always overwhelm even the most powerful among you." He pinched a coin on his chain again very tightly, "Did you think I only brought two?" His eyes narrowed, and he dug a nail into one of the coins, and a seal on the tag sparked to life, shining with a black light. It was another repression seal, not as powerful, and another thing, was that it wasn't even targeting the hostile beings around him. It was targeting Cody, and the Dark Spirits around him. The aura lightened up, when he activated it. The Dark Spirits stopped snarling, and the look on Cody's face relaxed a bit, "It is hard for me to control my power around angry people, so you must forgive me for threatening you. I can be quite nasty if it gets out of hand, so I must carry around seals not only to protect myself from others, but also to repress my own energy." It seemed he genuinely had trouble controlling his own aura, perhaps because it was so immense already. He had to use seals on himself to keep it reigned in, and because it was similar to a Dark Spirit's, it was probably strengthened by the same things that fueled Dark Spirits.

His hand shook slightly, as he still clenched the coin, "You can justify your ideas just as much as you like, but while you strongly believe in your way, I was raised to believe the opposite, so you will find equal opposition to yours from me. The only limitations you have are what you give yourself, the reason the Barrier exists is because so many insist that it is helpful. We have already learned that energy from beyond the Barrier causes Seers, Alchemists, and Meta-Humans to come into being. We have evidence that suggests more will be born if it is gone. Of course, chaos will happen at first, but you're the only ones who think it's impossible. Those with the correct skills used in right combination can effectively protect themselves. It is time for the supernatural world to become known, versus cowering in the dark, where those such as me are born from all the sadness and hate you create because you refuse to help yourselves."

As he spoke, a strange creature ran out from behind a corner, and it was clearly not anything anyone recognized. It looked like it had the upper-half of a wolf, and the lower half of a cat. It was the size of a bear, and its front paws were gigantic claws. The creature had what looked like eagle wings sprouting from its back, also. It ran the first part of the distance on four legs, but switched to two as it came up to Cody. It tapped him on the shoulder, revealing that its claws were also like hands. Its eyes had a distinctly human-like expression on them. Cody blinked, and leaned over, listening carefully as it whispered into his ear. He frowned and nodded, before the creature looked warily around, and then ran off and vanished. Its aura had been like that of multiple animals, nothing supernatural to speak of, although it hadn't been a natural creature. Perhaps there had been a small amount of human, though, in its energy. Cody straightened, and frowned, before pinching another coin on his chain, "I must cut this meeting short, I have business to attend to." He said. He looked around, "For those of you who are interested, you will be contacted later by less...attractive creatures." He said, clearly meaning their auras wouldn't draw attention.

He scratched the coin, and another seal glowed black, before their was a blinding flash of darkness, muffling all senses of the people and creatures present. Even the strongest of them would have been completely without the ability to detect the things in the world.

When the darkness dissipated, Cody and his Dark Spirits were gone, not a trace of their energy left to track.

"God dammit." Apep spat at the vanishing dark seer as he went his way, and advanced on the shadows remaining, cane in hand. Ramses pounced at a vanishing spirit and fell to the floor, scarring off the raven feasting on moldy bread crumbs. Apep snarled and turned back around, rolling his eyes animatedly. Some people never learned, did they? He looked over at where Cyril and Morgana stood. The two of them appeared to have just returned from a magic show. Apep hissed, and his fingernails lengthened into claws. Apep tended to transform a bit when he got angry. He noticed it instantly, and the claws sank back into his hands. He sighed loudly and leaned back against the dumpster, now winded from his outburst at Cody and his spirits.

"You three," Apep said, pointing to Cyril, Morgana, and Pink and trying to keep his cool "I strongly advise you to forget about this magician and his foolish games. You're too young to go to war. Enjoy your life before you find it swiped from you. As for you, Sundara," Apep now looked over at the demoness, trying to keep from smiling "God dammit woman, do you ever age?" He released his smile slowly, trying to see how Sundara would react. The raven, meanwhile, fluttered back up to his superior on the wire and whispered to him a summary of the conversation. Samael nodded and fluttered down into the alley, where he landed on the ground. The bird squawked aggressively at Ramses, who was attempting to pounce at it, and began to transform in a flutter of midnight black feathers. From the raven emerged a young boy with brown hair and sparkling brown eyes that seemed to pierce the darkness like twin fog lights.

"Angelus Mors propinquo." Benedict said, still at full size. He knew what this thing was. It was a Valkyrie! Samael moved to stare up at the cockatrice, but Apep hit the bird on the breast with his cane and it looked away, hissing angrily.

"I advise you against feasting on a Valkyrian." Apep said to the cockatrice "The legends say that eating of their flesh causes instant death to all creatures, even to vultures. It is an honor to meet you, Valkyrian. Not many of your kind still exist." Samael nodded kindly to Apep, but kept his distance out of intimidation. The man seemed to anger easily and Sam did not want to be his meal.

"Thank you. That is very kind." Samael said "So what do you all think of this 'combine' ideology? I personally do not know what to think of it. While a world where monsters can roam free does sound tempting, I personally do not know how humanity would accept it."

Morgyn nodded at Marshall as he introduced himself, looking up at the night sky when he did. The stars in the night sky twinkled and winked at them.

"No, I think it's interesting," Morgyn said thoughtfully. "I like looking at the stars. There's just so many and stuff... It's all left unexplored and open, y'know? And then those stars... It's almost like they can choose who can watch them, kinda. Like, if they want to they can show and everyone notices and feels compelled to watch them or something, right? But then they can also decide not to show, and no one notices them. It just seems... Interesting."

Morgyn had surprised herself with the statement, actually- she had never really thought of the stars that way. She had always seen them as just ornaments in the night sky or something. But she liked thinking of the stars more like the way she had just described them- it somehow helped her find a small way she compared to them. It was as if it were now a small relationship that makes them seem a bit more familiar. Morgyn smiled softly as she looked up before suddenly talking again.

"Oh and you aren't old! Thirty, right? That's not old at all, sir!"

Actually, Morgyn thought he was around fourty-five, fourty-six-ish, but she figured the guy could use a compliment. Everyone could, really.

Sundara

Sundara listened to what Cody had to say, and so far it seemed to her liking. Mainly the part about walking the Earth in her true form, and shedding the other cumbersome laws. She could care less about the Chimeras. They were abominations delft such a cruel hand that they'd be better off dead in her opinion. His explanation for controlling the dark spirits intrigued her as well. This immense power he spoke of would have to be proven first before she decided on anything though. There was one question though. How the Combine felt about the mass extermination of sick masses. Apep, whose voice she'd recognize anywhere started going off on his ideas postponing her opportunity to ask. He has a hint of truth, however sort sighted as usual in regards to mortal affairs. Cody's response answered her question, so she just let her old friend continue to chew him out. Living in peace wasn't exactly what she had in mind, however she wasn't apposed to it so long as those spared followed the right path. The Seers talk of her strength tarnished her opinion of him a little. We can all see how strong you are, and frankly it isn't that impressive. Were the seal forcing her human form upon her removed she had little doubt that she would win a prolonged battle versus him and however many bodyguards he had. Impressive at that was, it was still a sign of cowardice. Granted it was somewhat warranted based on the hostility he was getting.

There he goes about his wars. Sundara was a fan of conflict of any type, his were entertaining. Not as much as her own stories. Let humans fight there own wars was her opinion. All of her battles were glorious. Supernatural versus supernatural. Even though she wanted to annihilate a large portion of the human race, it was nothing she was planning on bragging about. More comparable to pest control than a war. Still tensions rose, which made her bored more than anything. A few others joined them, but they weren't important. Things escalated until a Chimera approached Cody, followed by her senses being blacked out. When she regained them he was gone along with the dark spirits. Pretty soon Apep returned to normal and remarked on the most noticeable thing. The fact that she hadn't aged a day in several hundred years. The same couldn't be said for him. "As a mater of fact I do not" she replied with a smirk. "You on the other hand, my friend" there was a brief pause while she looked him over. "You look like hell. Just like an other grizzled veteran, even got a bum leg since we last met." Sundara wasn't usually one for subtly, nor was Apep quite clearly from his episode earlier. A crow with a supernatural signature drew her attention. There was a number of things it could have been, a Valkyrie was not of the ones that first crossed her mind. "I'm not sure they deserve the choice. They are killing the planet, and their corruption knows no bounds. I have made this place my home too, and a new world order might be the solution to it's continued survival. I'm not suggesting extinction. Once they took only what they needed and maintained the balance. Those times need a comeback. By force if necessary."

Morbus and Emily

All of this was too overwhelming. Emily couldn't rap her mind around all of it, and was likely only to retain the parts about how the world really was. Nothing about Cody's cause. The fact that the supernatural existed was big enough to chew on without thinking about their presence becoming the norm. More just kept being thrown at her, which kept her silent. Morbus was waiting for the good stuff. How exactly it'd benefit him. Barrier or no barrier all he cared about was himself. Several others joined in, but the situation was already as precarious as it was going to get. It was after all only a matter of time before she was introduced to the other world, and eventually him. The dark seer left before mention the rewards specifically. His seal didn't do anything to her or the parasite. Finally she got collected enough to say something, for everyone else here was in the loop except for her. "Excuse me... anybody. Is all of this true? And does that mean... does that mean I'm not human?" Ah, she finally popped the question. So what are they going to say this time around? The answers varied, never had any guessed right without meeting meeting him for themselves. Something that few survived.
