Kydi was about to step into the transporter when Levith shoved him in harshly from behind. Tripping over the edge, Kydi fell and landed on his stomach. He barely caught himself in time to avoid his glasses shattering in his face. Bruised, Kydi flipped over and glared at Levith. "What was that for?!" he demanded.

"I dunno," Levith growled back, shutting the door and locking all the prisoners inside the transporter. He and Kydi exchanged such looks of hatred that one might have been burned walking between them.

"That guy..." Kydi mumbled. "I don't hate very many people, but he makes the list."

*   *   *

Sword in hand, Thray's appearance doubled in ominousness. A few people eyed him warily, staring at the softly glowing blade in fear. Inwardly, Thray cringed. There were some times where his reputation came in handy, such as when someone threatened Kydi or felt like cheating them when they went to get supplies. A few well-said words and a flash of steel was often enough deterrent for most to not mess with him.These people though. They knew who he was, and exactly what that sword he held had done. And they feared him for it. And they had a right to. Thray remembered when he had enjoyed his effect upon crowds...

...It wasn't until he met up with Kydi that he realized just how lonely of an existence he had been living. Not even his mother remembered his face, though he had a theory that his mother was a victim of the Overarch's vile plans for ultimate control over Thray's life. Saddened by this line of thought, Thray tried to focus on something else.

Parrath was digging through crates full of broken tools. Thray walked over, tucking his sword under his cloak as to stop drawing attention, and tried to figure out what Parrath was doing. The gray-blue feline wasn't paying attention, his tail lashing back and forth in agitation.

"I knows I left it somewhar in here..." mumbled the pirate. He overturned a shard of metal that looked like it had once been a shield. "Aha!" he cried. "Thar it be!" He withdrew a strange piece of metal. It was unlike the other metal in the bin, in that it was a deep, dark gray, with perfectly straight etched blue lines all over it. It fit perfectly in Parrath's hand, and at the pirate's touch, what appeared to be a finger-detection pad lit up on the inside curve of the object.

Noting Thray's curiosity, Parrath threw the Kyrenien a sly look. "Ye've got yer sword. I've got mine." He chuckled to himself, and walked to the end of the room opposite the doors they had come through. here were more doors, akin to the first in every way except that they were of a darker, brownish metal, and some had deep dents and gouges in them.

It was then Thray realized that the silvery blast doors were locked tight, and that the arena lay beyond the bronze doors.

Vetrys glared at Levith.  "That was entirely uncalled for," he said, loud, but not yelling.  He could have said a lot more, but he knew that Levith outranked him.  Though not by much.  He shared Levith's general hatred of the Kyreniens, yes, but Kydi had shown few signs of hostility.  No, Vetrys didn't like the Kyreniens, but he wasn't outright cruel.  People were always people, and should be treated that way.

Somnus quickly approached Kydi, though he was listening to Vetrys too.  He nudged Kydi up with one paw, and quietly asked, "are you alright?"

*  *  *

Kirex, who was probably the most easily bored person on the planet, was tired of waiting for the gate to open.  He began individually inspecting each of his knives, checking if they were properly sharpened.  One of them was chipped, which aggravated him to no end.  They were his knives, and there was probably no replacing them.  Even if he did get new ones, they would balance differently.  He frowned, and tucked them back into his belt.  Waiting...

Ketryn looked at Vetrys, surprised but with a blank face as he reassured her. She slowly nodded in response, whispering a "thank you" before stepping into the transporter. At least one of their captors had some kind words. As Levith pushed Kydi into the transporter, Ketrynsaw the contrast between him and Vetrys. Levith wasn't ever going to say anything reassuring, probably. If given the chance, she wondered if he would have had Kydi join this arena fighting, as well. Probably.

She was about to approach Kydi to help him up, but Somnus did, instead. Ketryn could only close her eyes, trying to help her nerves calm down. She wasn't going to be in the fights, so she didn't have to worry, right? But then... Beings were getting forced to fight- some to the death. Her right eye twitched in response toe the thought. She will just close her eyes as this goes on. She didnt know how she could avoid listening, however. Maybe a subject change would help.

"It's taking a while for them to figure out what to do with us," Ketryn remarked to Vetrys, forcing her mind to think of their own captivity instead of the Games.

"I'm okay," Kydi answered Somnus, "just a little irritated." Sighing, he stood up and leaned against the wall as the transporter began to move. Levith glared at him from outside the mobile cell's walls, as if daring him to speak up.

The journey wasn't long; just another matter of minutes. Being inside the transporter meant that they couldn't exactly see where they were going, but Kydi figured the Jakulo must have their home mapped by memory. The transport came to a stop.

"Alright," Levith growled. "When the cell doors open, you will follow Vetrys into the stands. You will take a seat, either on a seat or on the floor, and you will remain there until the Games are over. Am I clear? Good."

The transport doors opened, revealing a vast, circular arena approximately the diameter of a football field. Seated on stony benches hewn directly from the surrounding rock were thousands of Jakulo, both young and old. A few were sitting happily, talking, but the general mood seemed to be one of boredom and unease.

The seating the prisoners were being directed to were empty, and separated by a thick plastic wall. Being a near fifty feet from the base of the arena, there was no chance anything below could scale the wall and climb into the stands. The view however was spectacular.

What was most interesting was how the stadium was lit. Being that there was hundreds of feet of rock above them, sunlight was not an option. Bright fluorescent lights suspended from the ceiling and wired directly into the rock were hung everywhere, even over the arena itself. This patchy lighting seemed to add to the rough theme of the Jakulo town, in which most things looked unpolished.

Wratchet hopped ahead of everyone else and leaned over the railing, looking down into the arena.
"Nothing's started yet!" she called, balancing precariously.

Vetrys led the small group into the seating area for prisoners. He chose a seat in the very back, so that he could see everyone, and sat down quietly. There were still Jakulo filing into the regular area, as the Games had yet to start, and they were making quite a lot of noise, all talking and finding seats.

Somnus took in the arena, the seating around it, everything. It occurred to him that he could, at any time, simply fly down into the arena, and possibly into the normal seating area. This was likely a bad idea, as they would just sent guards after him, but it was still something to keep in mind. At the very least, perhaps he could help Thray, if he had to.

He backed away from the railing, far enough that it wouldn't look like he was trying to escape, and stretched. His wings spread wide, wider than the size of his cell, which was intended for Kyreniens at best. He was glad that he could at least do that. That done, he chose a seat away from the rail, but where he could see most of the arena anyway. He looked at Ketryn for a moment, then motioned for her to sit behind him, if she wanted, so she couldn't see.

Ketryn glanced towards the arena once they arrived, before noticing Somnus pointing behind him. She felt a sense of relief as she quickly moved to the seat, grateful that he was kind enough to offer her a seat without a clear view of the arena. As she sat down, Ketryn leaned forward, quickly mumbling "Thank you," before leaning back, looking down and fiddling with her hands nervously, probably the only sign she could show of being anxious aside from a stammering of her voice.

The most Ketryn believed she could do now, though, was wait out the games. Her eyes darted around, examining different beings that had arrived as a way to calm herself.

Kydi sat down near the railing, so he could see. His bad vision was improved by his glasses, but he figured proximity to the action would help him locate Thray better. Not long after he sat down, the exit door through which the prisoners had come shut, and locked loudly. Sighing, Kydi leaned over and put his head in his hands.

Wratchet, still leaning over the railing, suddenly chirped excitedly. "Look! Praecus has arrived in his stand!" Sure enough, across the arena in an elevated, royally-decorated stand was the leader of the Jakulo. He was hard to see from the distance, but he held a microphone and his voice was unmistakable.

"Welcome, fellow Jakulo, to the Games!" Praecus said with false excitement. His voice resonated around the arena with a loud echo. The Jakulo in the stands clapped politely, filling the arena with even more noise. Adopting a more serious tone, Praecus talked on. "As we all know, the Games are meant for the punishment of those who have broken our laws," he said somberly. "Let us remember that we Jakulo are not here for sport, but to witness what happens to those who break our laws. We are here to observe justice, and we wish for all who enter the arena to prove their desire to repent. May they be successful and come to join us in society again..."

There was a long moment of silence, in which every Jakulo in the stand bowed his or her head and said, "may they live another day as a good citizen." Wratchet seemed particularly moved by this speech, as she jumped down off the railing and walked over to stand by Vetrys. Absentmindedly she leaned on him, much of the playful sparkle gone from her eyes.

Even Levith looked particularly saddened. He took his hat from his head and held it over his chest as a sign of respect, and looked as if he were remembering someone special.

Somnus watched as Vetrys too bowed his head. He seemed truly saddened, and even Wratchet wasn't acting as cheerful as she usually was. After a moment's though, Somnus too bowed. He had been lucky enough not to be greatly effected by the rule of the Kyreniens personally, but he had seen more destruction by them than most ever would. Each and every planet he had ever seen was either uninhabited, or occupied by Kyreniens. This place, the short time he had spent on the surface, the entire underground city... Nothing was right, and he had an idea who was to blame.

But they seemed to be getting along well, despite their losses. And they were taking absolutely no more nonsense. He supposed they deserved that, but did their prisoners? Kydi could easily have fixed the ship and left without bothering them. But they didn't know that. Who wouldn't react to the Invaders with instant hostilty? He had.

So what was right? The Jakulo didn't deserve this, but neither did their prisoners. Did the Kyreniens? Who really was to blame for this destruction?

He wasn't sure.

"Without further formality," Praecus said solemnly, "let the games begin." The Jakulo leader signaled a few guards who were standing next to three levers of enormous size. Using all four arms, the guards pulled the three levers down in synch, as if they had practiced and performed this action many times. Three large bronze doors down in the arena slowly creaked open, and a great weight seemed to settle over the arena.

"Participants of the Games," Praecus ordered into his microphone, "enter the arena!"

*  *  *

"That be our cue," Parrath whispered, staring out into the arena from the frame of the door. "C'mon me hearties!" he called to the crowd behind him. "Today we face our final judgment! AGAIN! Let us show tha hangman who we be takin' orders from!" Grabbing Thray and Kirex's arms, the pirate charged out into the arena, and was soon followed by most of the crowd.

There were battle cries, sobs, and exclamations of all sorts as the combatants charged forth. When everyone had emerged, the bronze doors swung slowly shut. The various aliens began grouping up in what Thray assumed to be their various teams. There were quite a few, numbering at at least eight separate teams that he could count. They varied in size from two to five beings, and of course, there was always the random loner in the crowd praying that his or her lucky stars would shine on them today.

A booming voice overhead that Thray recognized suddenly put all the prisoners in silence. Praecus...

"Fighters, combatants, the condemned..." said the Jakulo leader, "whatever you wish to call yourselves, you will now be reminded of why exactly you are here today. Both for your own benefit, and for the benefit of those watching today."

Thray looked to Parrath for an explanation. Reading his expression, Parrath said, "he means read the charges against us," said the feline. "I think it's ta make 'em feel better about throwin' us criminals down here. They've got ta remember why they did it in tha first place."

"What were you charged for?" Thray asked, suddenly curious.

Parrath smiled, flashing his golden fang. "Yer aboot ta find out, Sunshine."

Kirex was grinning and waving as if he had signed up for the Games on purpose. He was determined to always make the best of absolutely everything, and in this case, it was fun to see the Jakulo's reactions to his behavior. After all, he was supposed to be down there as punishment. If he was having fun, they had a problem. After a moment he turned to face the prisoner's seating. There were several new ones, one of which was a Kyrenien. Probably Thray's friend. Kirex's grin widened, and he began jumping up and down, alternating between waving frantically and wildly gesturing at Thray.

* * *

Somnus scanned the crowd, quickly finding Thray. He seemed to have picked up some teammates. That was good, he would survive longer with help. Suddenly, he realized that one of them was waving at him. Or at least he thought he was. It was hard to tell exactly who he was waving at, especially at such a distance. He stared for a second, dumbfounded, then waved back with one wing.

Evidently, they had seen him. The prisoner in question stopped waving, leapt straight up, and yelled "YES!" Somnus shook his head, utterly confused. Thray could probably have found more... sane... companions...

Ketryn sunk back into her seat as the games began. no. NONONONONONO... in her eyes, this is just like experimenting- if not worse. Her fingers went up to her head and slowly laced through her hair, nervousness evident. She glanced past Somnus' wings, spotting Thray to make sure he was there before sinking back into her seat again, returning back to her previous stance. This whole ordeal was enough to put anyone on edge, but including this game it made Ketryn feel as if she were about to go crazy from everything.

Ketryn closed her eyes, trying to clear her mind of the current thoughts that were clouding her mind. After one mechanical sigh- even without lungs, the sigh helped calm her mind- Ketryn slowly opened her eyes, moving over a seat to watch the Games. She would just have to hope for the best. This experience will probably help her, after all- she needed to face her fears of reoccurring memories and also deal with these problems at some point or another. The point in time might a well be now. Her expressionless face stared ahead, carefully keeping an eye on everything. Thray had found some allies, it looked like. That was good. She would just have to hope that they did well.

After a few second thoughts, Ketryn adde to her internal decision another part.

She wa going to close her eyes whenever there is any deaths.

PostSubject: Re: Endurance: The Next Chapter (IC)   Tue May 20, 2014 2:32 am

Kydi looked at Thray, conflicted. Unsure of what to do, he stared with a tortured look on his face. Thray didn't look hurt, but then again Kydi was pretty sure anyone dumb enough to attack the assassin was in for the biggest surprise of their life. Still, Kydi worried. Thray was tough in most ways, but in others he was surprisingly delicate. There was something else Kydi was worried about too...Something psychological that he had watched Thray lapse into during moments of extreme tension where either his life or Kydi's was in danger. Kydi dearly hoped that wouldn't happen here. Not now. There wouldn't be anything he could do to stop him.

From his high seat above the arena, Praecus began reading off of a list of names with the subject's crime.

*  *  *

Thray soon learned the people he was with were not down with him because of simple crimes. He realized, with a bit of a jolt, that these people had done some horrible things.

"Delleran Lemotha," Praecus' voice boomed, "for causing a landslide in a mining tunnel that resulted in the death of two fellow miners." At this, one of the Jakulo in the arena looked down at his feet, as if he were trying to melt into the floor. Nakion, the angry Jakulo from the previous day, laid a comforting hand on his fellow prisoner's shoulder.

"Nakion Fayd," Praecus went on, "for murdering his brother and spouse."

Thray blinked, looking over at the large Jakulo in surprise. "What?" Nakion hissed, "think Kyreniens are the only beings capable of horrendous crimes?" Disgusted, the Jakulo stomped away, a large mace in hand, and proceeded to smash the ground. Delleran watched him, and soon joined in with his own mace.

As Praecus kept reading names, Thray soon became bored. Tense, he fingered the hilt of his sword, causing it to pulsate blue at uneven intervals. He watched his fellow prisoners grow more and more agitated as the crimes continued to be read, and he himself realized he did not want to be called out on his deeds.

"Captain Parrath Paletail and his crew- er- Kirex," Praecus said, nearing the bottom of the list. "For blowing up our explosive storehouse and attempting to steal an innumerable amount of supplies from our spaceship repair warehouse. As an end note, the resulting explosion leveled houses in the district, and resulted in the deaths of twenty people!" Praecus paused, as the crowd in the stands was beginning to get angry. There was a chorus of boo's and growls, and a couple Jakulo threw rocks and other objects from the stands at the still-smiling pair of pirates.

"'Twas an accident," Parrath whispered, elbowing Thray. The Kyrenien said nothing, facepalming instead.

There was a pause in Praecus' speech.
"...And now for the most recent addition to our gang of criminals," said the Magistrate, his voice once again booming across the arena. "Thray Thanasima, otherwise known as The Hunter, of the Kyrenien Empire."

"Aye," Kirex agreed cheerfully, "twas quite th' exciting accident, weren't it?" He didn't really expect Parrath to reply, as the Magistrate was still reading. He felt it was important to make the point that blowing up the majority of the explosives the Jakulo owned, while terrifying, and full of consequences, had been very fun.

* * *

Thray Thanasmia.

How the crowd loved to hear that name. Thray was the icon of Invader cruelty. Or at least, The Hunter was. The arena exploded in boos and hisses such that Somnus laid his ears flat against his neck to block it out. Vetrys leaned back and crossed all four of his arms. Grim, but satisfied. It wasn't pretty, but this was what Thray deserved for his crimes. There would be justice.

He didn't speak, though. He just watched. He watched Somnus shrink slightly, worried and even truly upset in some way Vetrys couldn't understand. Surely Somnus knew what Thray had done. So why did these people trust, even like, the Invader's most famous monster? Something didn't sit right with Vetrys, and he intended to find out exactly what. Just... Not now. He sat back, not noticeably any less at ease, and watched the Games.

As the crowd exploded with displeasure, both Thray and Kydi looked down at their shoes in shame.

"For being personally responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent beings," Praecus read, "for willingly aiding the Kyrenien Invasion Forces in committing crimes against the galaxy, including but not limited to enslaving our own planet, and leaving the surface uninhabitable!"

Levith, up in the prisoner stands, growled deep in his throat. The frill on his neck fluttered warningly, and his grip tightened on the blasters he held. How he wanted to see the Kyreniens punished! Called to justice for what they had done!

*   *   *

Parrath nudged Thray again, causing the shamefaced Kyrenien to look at him. Thray's eyes  burned with an emotion the pirate couldn't identify.

"Lad," Parrath said, "I'll assume yers was an accident too." Of course the pirate knew better, but he didn't think any of it mattered now.

Thray couldn't speak. Parrath was being too kind. Why did the pirate choose to ignore his reputation? No one else here had, and Thray doubted many people ever would. Further confused by Parrath's behavior, Thray tried to make sense of the world and hang on to the shred of hope the pirate had just given him.

Kirex nodded in agreement. Thray may have done some horrible things, but a lot of people made mistakes. Usually a mistake was something more along the lines of tripping over something, or forgetting where they put something. But Kirex figured a mistake was a mistake, and if that's what Thray chose to call his past, then he would be fine with that.

Not that it mattered at the moment. The important thing was that Thray was going to help keep them alive, as long as they returned the favor. Kirex pulled one of his daggers from his belt, testing its weight until he was holding it balanced exactly the way he wanted it. In his other hand, he took one of the small bags. They were labled not by color, but by texture and the way he had them arranged, so that he could pick the one he wanted without looking at it.

He smirked, looking back up at Thray. "So," he said, "how're ya at seein' in tha dark?"

Ketryn internally winced as she listened to every name being called off, ending with Thray. From what she had seen of him, she just couldn't imagine him like that, still. It was hard to believe, but she knew it was true. She was also curious about the beings Thray had teamed up with, now- hadn't they said they blew up a storehouse? Ketryn leaned forward, examining them with her blank expression. They seemed to still want to stay. With Thray even after his crimes were announced. This had Ketryn finding favor towards them, as well. How many people could make it past the Games, though?

Ketryn looked at Vetrys before asking just that. She would ask Levith, but she doubted he would care to answer in favor of anyone here, really, judging by how he growled in response to Thray. "Can there be more than one being that survives the games?" Ketryn paused before adding, "Also, does everyone who loses have to die?" She was hoping the answer to the last question was a no.

"My night vision?" Thray said, pondering Kirex's question. He shrugged mentally. "Good, I guess." He could see as if were day in darkness, which aided him in many instances during his career as an assassin. "Why do you ask?"

"Eh.." Parrath interrupted. "Well ya see, tha monsters aren't too fond a that lights..."

"Lights out," Praecus commanded, gesturing at another set of guards. Some large switches were pulled, and in waves, the powerful lamps went out.

In the distance, a low, menacing growl echoed hauntingly from the arena.

*   *   *

Kydi could NOT see in the dark. "Hey!" he called, jumping up.

"Easy there," Levith snapped at him. Something was put in Kydi's hands. It was a pair of goggles, which at first the Kyrenien was puzzled as to the function of.

"Oh put 'em on," Wratchet laughed, watching him. Kydi did so, and realized they granted him night vision. He stared at the Jakulo, noting with unease how their eyes all glowed red with the goggles on.

"How are YOU seeing?!" Kydi demanded, watching Levith walk around and hand out more goggles to the other prisoners who needed them.

"We can see in a form of infrared," Wratchet answered calmly, and then turned back to the games.

Kirex, unlike most of the combatants, could not see particularly well in the dark. He was alright to walk around, but he didn't like the idea of trying to fight monsters without being absolutely sure where they were. Besides, if there wasn't any light source at all, most ways of seeing in the dark ceased working anyway.

He saw a shadow of motion to his left, and spun around instantly to face it. He threw the pouch he had been holding right at it, and hit it square in the face. The area around the monster exploded with light, and the creature itself paused, confused, as Kirex's flare fell to the ground under its feet. Now was his chance. He snarled, and leapt forward, now brandishing dual daggers.

Somnus politely refused goggles. Mainly because he could already see, but also because he wasn't sure they would fit him. His eyes were just adjusting to the gloom when a flash of light erupted from somewhere near the center of the arena. One of the monsters seemed to be slightly on fire, and the next thing he knew, one of Thray's companions was leaping towards it. He watched, silently hoping that the three of them would get out unscathed.

Parrath charged forward after Kirex, drawing his own blade. The hilt lit up, recognizing Parrath's fingerprints, and a glowing purple cutlass formed from light sprouted forth from it. The blade was bright enough to illuminate a radius of two or three feet from Parrath, which gave him enough light to work with.

The creature was a pale fleshy color, with three front arms, and four legs. It walked with a slight lurch, as if it were off-balance. It also possessed a long tail that dragged along the ground as it moved, making a shuffling noise. The creature's head was triangular in shape, and had crooked, jagged teeth protruding from its mouth. Sensitive hairs on the creature's head and back tested the air in place of eyes, which it did posess, but were large and milky-looking.

It moaned at the combatants with something Thray could only describe as hungry. He drew his own sword, which pulsed blue depending on how he was feeling, and followed Parrath.

Around the arena, other monsters were battling other teams. It was fearsome, and many of the Jakulo in the audience turned away as one of the fighters was crushed under the heavy tail of another marauding monsters.

Kirex snarled, driving the pair of daggers into the creature's back and using them to jump up, over it. He landed on the other side of it, the feathers on the back of his neck beginning to rise into a large mane, and tucked away one of the daggers, back into his belt. He grabbed another bomb, this one different from the last, and threw it right at the monster's face.

It burned brighter than the other, a lasting flare still smouldering on the ground. In fact, it wasn't long before the monster's sparse fur was smoking, and it let loose a horrible wail as it realized that its entire face was on fire. Kirex flattened his large ears and grimaced, watching the monster paw at its face. That should do it, he decided, and checked to see if any other monsters were approaching. Parrath could finish that one off.

Parrath was acting like the insane pirate he was. Now that the monster was effectively blinded, he could kill it. Charging forward with his feline grace, he drove his glowing sword into the monster's soft head, silencing the burning creature with a sickening crunch. In the dark, the creature looked like a demon from some deep, dark, fiery place. As it died, the flames did too, and the light faded. The arena was once again dark, and the monsters on the fringe of the light ring dared creep closer.

"Avast Thray!" Parrath called, pointing behind the Kyrenien. "Keep an eye on yer backside Sunshine!" Turning, Thray found that he was facing another of the beasts; this one smaller, but with a lot more spikes. It was nearly fifteen feet away, but with the way it was growling, Thray felt this was much too close of a distance. Taking on a fighting stance, he waited for the monster to make it's first move.
Someone yelled something at him that he didn't quite catch.

Something hit him hard from the left, and Thray went tumbling to the ground, his sword falling a few feet from him. Since he was no longer touching it, the light went out. He glanced upward, trying to figure out what had hit him. To his horror, the smaller creature had a scorpion-like tail, long and sinuous enough to sneak in the dark around and hit him from the side. It was even equipped with a stinger, which Thray was relieved to find had not punctured his seemingly thin clothing. Still though, he had a feeling he was in trouble.

Parrath ran toward the felled Kyrenien, yelling curses and Kirex's name.

In the audience, Kydi panicked. He stood up, contemplating tearing the goggles off so he didn't have to witness Thray's fight. Or any of the violence really. Grouchily, he was sat forcibly back down by a very irritated-looking Levith.

Wratchet wandered over and huddled next to Vetrys. As the violence progressed and Kydi had his panic attack, she gripped the side of Vetry's vest, and turned away from the arena.

Kirex whirled around, one dagger still in hand. He barely took a step forward, but instead threw the dagger, seemingly right at Thray. Though he couldn't see as well in the dark, his aim was perfect. The dagger flew only inches above Thray, straight into the creature's neck. He grinned, not even checking to see if it was as badly wounded as he thought, and charged toward the other monster.

Vetrys put one hand on Wratchet's shoulder, but did not turn himself. He was watching Thray. While he had always heard the stories of The Hunter, and would never doubt most of them, he had also had a lot of experience as the head warden. He knew how to read people, to tell if they were likely to attack him. To tell how they felt about a crime they had committed.

If the stories were true, Thray worked alone, never spoke, and had no mercy for any other living beings. These three things were quickly being proven wrong. But only to Kydi, who was also an Invader... It all hung on how he treated his companions in the arena, and so Vetrys watched.

Having solved the 'issue' he saw with Kydi, Levith decided to answer the android's question.
"The only way you CAN lose the games is to die," he said, exasperated. "Some people stay in the arena longer than others, depending on their crimes."

*   *   *

Scrambling to his feet, Thray snatched up his sword and growled at himself mentally. That was stupid. You should have seen that coming. What's wrong with you? Shaking his head, he narrowed his eyes and slashed at the creature that had attempted to fell him. Kirex's knife was still sticking out of the thing's neck, and it was snarling and squealing in the manner that suggested it was dying, but not dead enough to be trusted. Thray brought his sword down on the animal's head, silencing it once and for all. As an afterthought, he pulled the dagger from it's neck, thinking it might be useful and that Kirex might want it back.

Meanwhile, Parrath, in his attempt to get to Thray, had become distracted with another monster. The two looked at each other mistrustfully. Pirate versus cave creature, they stalked each other in circles.

"Don't cha know who ye be quarrelin' with?!" Parrath taunted, waving his sword around to cast light and make the shadows dance. "I be the great pirate Paletail! Ye best be runnin' back fer tha topside whar ye belong!"

The creature didn't seem to like that very much. Leaping with an agility that the pirate anticipated, Parrath charged forward into the creature, his blade piercing through its underbelly. Snarling in agony, the four-limbed, smooth-skinned gray thing reeled back, disarming Parrath and falling on its side.

"Quit yer thievery, demon!" Parrath growled, charging after the wounded creature in search of his blade. It was still stuck in the thing's belly.

Ketryn hadn't been able to see anything in the arena- she had refused to wear goggles, but the light on her forehead was visible, allowing for her to see those around her, slightly. And then there was a fire in the arena that had made her able to see others fighting. Ketryn quickly looked down, holding in the word, "stop." She did not like this- not one bit. Ketryn felt her heart- the only other thing beside her brain that was organic- quicken it's pace and it took her a moment to process Levith's talking to her.

So just about everyone in the arena was going to die? Ketryn winced before standing up. "Your government is twisted," she said flatly, making the statement seem all the more true. Ketryn was sure if she could voice emotion, however, her voice would be shaking and there would probably be sobs daring to escape her throat. "I don't care if you are forced to be here- it is sickening to see this. Have you ever heard the saying about what you put into someone is what will eventually come out? Put in trash, trash will be the outcome..." She sat back down with a sigh. There was no point standing, but she did find a point to the words she was saying- mostly to release all the anger she had in the words. "Put in murder and murder will be the outcome. Put in fear and fear will be the outcome. No order will come from this- only frantic thoughts of worry. No happiness. Only chaos." Ketryn's voice faded to an inaudible whisper as she continued her list.

Levith rolled his eyes, a growl escaping his throat. "Who are you to judge our ways?" He hissed, taking a threatening step toward Ketryn. "Who are you to determine the fate of those who have harmed us? What would you have us do? Live in anarchy with criminals running through our tunnels? We would not last as a society; we would be savages!" He was nearly yelling now. "You disrespect our ways! You come with Kyreniens and call us the evil ones! You call us cowards and proclaim us weak!"

Kydi feared for Ketryn. He felt like she was a bit dramatic; one couldn't expect alien races to adhere to the same moral code. Things were different everywhere... People did what they had to in order to survive. The Jakulo had been living here for a long time. This was their society.

*   *    *

Thray jumped up after the beast that had Parrath's sword. By Kyrenien standards, Thray was fast. Very fast, both in body and in mind. Injured and screaming, the creature was easy to catch up to.

Stopping just out of range of the thrashing creature, Thray tried to think of a way to get Parrath's sword without getting his head taken off by the marauding alien. Parrath caught up to the tall Kyrenien after a moment, breathing hard.

"So tha legends be half-true about ye," he wheezed. "Yer wicked fast, Sunshine... But last I checked ye also don't possess a voice."

Thray smiled sadly.
"For a long time I didn't."
