Jali's eyes widened. He looked at Sira. "I'll go meet with them. Want to come?" he asked. She nodded.
"We'll be back. We just need to talk to Zanita for a minute" Sira said.
"Of course," Kal said holding back the brush for them to step out.

Jali and Sira came out with smiles. Jali couldn't stop himself from grinning upon the friend's arrival. Sira herself was very joyful. Var sat down next to Kyra and watched, almost about to giggle at her excitement. He was glad that at least one person around here wasn't dreading everything. He noted that she may have been the exact opposite of Layla.

"Hello Zanita, what brings you here on this fine day?" Jali greeted.

Zanita nodded at Cully and the other male hyena, who she had finally managed to nudge so that they stood beside her, rather than behind her, as though hiding. "Well actually, it's quite a crazy story, I should say. Cully and Malik here were out hunting on the outskirts of our new territory, when Cully stumbled upon an old scent trail, as though Gamba had passed through the area awhile ago at some point. He ran back and fetched me, and then we wound up running back to the same spot." She nodded at Kyra and Var, "Then, we ran into these two, and they led us here. I know we were searching for Gamba, but if he's out hunting, seeing him can wait, he doesn't like the idea of a new arrival scaring off the prey he's been stalking, it's been like that since he was little." She then shook her head, amused by some memory. "At any rate, we came to see how you were doing. We heard you're calling yourselves the Sunset Pride now, a beautiful name, it suits any location under the sun."

Jali smiled. "We are doing perfect. The pride is in the best shape it's been in a long time. I love the name. Gamba's mate came up with it. It has more meaning than you think. Layla's sister Dyna always adored the sun set and watched it ever evening. Seeing it was dusk when we settle and the thought came to Layla, she used it. It has fitted quite perfectly. So anyways, how's your clan? Anything interesting happening? Saved anyone from crocodile bites and broken bones?" Jali asked recalling the old memory of when the Brushland Clan saved him.

Layla dragged a Kudu by her jaws happily through the brush as they approached the pride camp once more. She sniffed and laid the prey down.

"I smell hyenas. Be careful, something could be going on at camp" Layla said to Gamba. She picked up her prey again and began walking forward again.

Zanita's ears pricked up, "Mate? Layla is his mate now? How much did I miss the last time I visited you lions?" She asked. Normally, the dread of every parent was when their children started to fall in love. However, Zanita was not in any way angry. She had met Layla already, and greatly approved of the lioness. She had no problem with her being Gamba's mate, nevertheless, it was shocking news. She sat back on her haunches, momentarily stunned, "Goodness, I have a daughter now." She mused.

As Gamba walked alongside Layla, he took a deep breath, scenting the air, before pausing, recognition on his face, "Those are not ordinary hyenas." he said, his tail suddenly flicking wildly. "I would know those scents, anywhere." With this, he ran ahead, and dashed into the camp, while Layla arrived behind him. He looked over at the three hyenas, his eyes focusing on the one with pure black fur, "Zanita? What are you doing here?" He said, pleasantly surprised, and overjoyed to see his mother. He ran over in quick bounds, something that few lions might actually do. Lions quickened their stride, but Gamba's movement was different. It was the tiger in him, the blood of a creature that nothing in the land was familiar with. "We found her while we were out hunting." Kyra chipped in.

"What? My son has a mate, and doesn't bother to come tell me? Gamba, you know I take family seriously." Zanita's tone was scolding, but there was no sting in it. She was too overjoyed at seeing him to be furious about a lack of informing.

Layla laid her kill in the heap of carrion at the camp's center and walked over to the group. "I knew I'd smelled that scent before" she said almost to herself. She was overjoyed to see Zanta again, especially now that she was more than just the leader of a friendly clan now. She was a mother to her.

She couldn't help but grin, smiling at the presence of Zanita. "Hi Zanita. Remember me?" she replied.

Jali sat down on his haunches next to Sira as they watched. Var seemed to have the same expression. "Yep. Found her while hunting. Or talking more like it. We hadn't done much hunting at all" he purred.

Zanita walked over to Layla, "There you are, Layla! There's my beautiful daughter!" She said, joyfully accepting the lioness as family without so much as batting an eye. "This has made history, dear, by becoming Gamba's mate, you are not only my daughter, but are now related to hyenas, as well as to lions. This will make quite the story later, and my clan will rejoice in knowing that my son has someone with whom he can share his life. You both have my blessing." She told her. Gamba walked up, "I am glad to hear this, a blessing is how the hyenas officially acknowledge any pairing of mates. Zanita's blessing makes it official, both in the eyes of lions, as well as in the eyes of her clan, and all others." He explained, in case Layla did not know. He then sat down, and his tail flicked, "So, how has the clan been, Zanita?" He asked. Zanita turned to him, "In truth, your pride and my clan are neighbors, very close camps. We're just up the hill in the Nightshade Forest, as we've come to call it." She replied.

Kyra had been smiling in a silly fashion while watching Gamba, Zanita, and Layla, before suddenly remembering something, and flattening her ears, shutting her eyes, "Oh, my! I forgot the showers! The Sunset Pride does them, right?" She turned to Var, Jali, and Sira, "In Ethiopia, when two lions are officially considered mates, or when a litter of cubs is born, we have this thing where everyone in the pride picks a single flower and places it at the entrance to the den that the two lions live in. It's a tradition here, and it's not required for you to do it, but everyone thinks it's a nice thing to do, because it shows you support the cubs or the pairing. Nobody even knows how it started." She glanced over at Gamba and Layla, "In this case, I need to go pick two flowers." She looked at Var, "I have to get one for your parents, and I have to go get one for Layla and Gamba." She started to run off, but suddenly stopped, to tell them something else.

"Oh! almost forgot, if they ask, don't tell them where I'm going, or what I'm doing. They're not supposed to know who left the flowers." She said, before vanishing into the trees, off to look for flowers.

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptyTue Aug 06, 2013 12:10 am

Layla smiled at Zanita. Her face may have broke, unable to withdraw the happiness. "Thank you! Thank you so much!" She seemed to say in a voice that was almost a shout. She giggled, seemingly childish for the moment. She sat next to Gamba, giving him a wide grin.

Var smiled as Kyra began to walk away. "I'll get some too then" he said rounding a tree and going off down a slope.

"Oh, Layla. I also had something I was meaning to ask you" Jali said. The lioness' ears pricked up. "Oh?" she asked.

"One of our guard lionesses is... sadly, about to die. The medical lioness said that it's cancer at its finest. I was wondering if you'd like to fill the position and take a permanent guard job" the king said. Layla's eyes widened.

"Really? REALLY? I'd love to! That's one of the best jobs in the whole pride! Oh thank you! This day just keeps getting better and better!" She said.

Suddenly Jali turned as commotion came from the border of the camp.

"Your majesty! Your majesty! We have urgent visitors!" Said a guard lioness. They escorted several hyenas and a tall stranger lion into the camp. Jali recognized the scent. Smother Klan. Scar stood at the head of them, but she smelled different.

"Scar, my goodness what is it?" Jali asked.

"I just found this lion in my territory, making huge chaos in my camps! He says he's looking for someone named Var and someone named Snake. He said he followed a scent trail that matched them!" Scar hissed.

The lion stepped forward. "And you are?" Asked Jali. The black manes lion had seething green eyes that almost looked yellowish, a muddy color. He had a few scars around his nose and a deformed fang that stuck out of his lip. He was dirty and greasey. Obviously he hadn't took a good dip in a lake lately.

"I am Snake's brother, Nail" he said. Jali nodded. "Yes I remember you. Someone fetch Var!" Jali shouted. Taru responded by shooting off into the valley.

"I am sorry to say that Snake is dead. I will explain later. Out of all the brothers only Var survives" said Jali. Nail nodded and sat back. Jali turned to Scar. "Thank you, I greatly appreciate it" he said. Scar rolled her eyes. Jali was confused.

"Sweetie don't be rude" said a male standing next to her. He looked like a quiet, sensitive person with a sweet heart. She hissed, "shut up Feth!" She said. He sighed trying to make her feel better by licking her ear. "Not in public!" She whispered.

"Scar, you have a mate. Why this is... Very unexpected of you" Jali said as he and Sira gave each other bewildered looks. Scar scoffed. "Yeah..."

"She's going to have cubs too" the male bragged. Scar kicked him and he quickly went quiet and slipped back into the Smother crowd.

Var finally arrived with Taru. Var must have run through a bush or something. He had a bunch of flowers, leaves, and throns in his hair.

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptyTue Aug 06, 2013 2:03 am

Zanita's ears pricked up at this news, but she looked as happy as a hyena could be, and it was contagious. Within moments the two Nightstone hyenas with her, as well as Gamba, looked to be in great spirits, although they had already been so, before this point. Zanita was happy for Scar, she had lived a rough life, and it was nice to know that she had a kind, gentle mate to look after her. She was going to have cubs, too, and silently the black hyena leader wished the spirits would impart blessings on them all. Those cubs had a strong mother and a caring father to live up to. "It seems that things are happening quite quickly, here." She said, sitting back on her haunches. "Goodness, my age must be catching up to me, perhaps I'm just too slow." She said, shaking her head. "Regardless, today brings much joy in its wake." Gamba padded up next to her, "Zanita, it would take being trampled by an elephant stampede before you started to slow down. You never look your age, and don't you start acting it, either." He told her, affectionately. Even though they weren't related by blood, Gamba loved Zanita as much as any son could love his mother, if not more.

Gamba looked at Var with interest when he returned with Taru, his mane tangled with vegetable matter of every kind. "Now, I understand Kyra running off," He said, before suddenly remembering, "Ah, of course, the shower, she must have told Var about it." He turned to Layla, "Kyra left to go get flowers to place at the entrance to our den. She's probably including Var's parents, as well, since their cubs were just born. It's a tradition here. Don't tell her and Var you know about it, though, we're not supposed to know who brings the flowers. It's not really necessary, but someone came up with it at one point, and it just stuck." He seemed amused, at the thought.

Kyra ran through the woods, frantically looking for a patch of pretty flowers that she could use to scatter at the entrance of the two dens that needed them. What she wasn't expecting, was to run under a tree where the roots were above ground, and light scattered through leaves to dapple the forest floor. Because of the way the leaves and light were, she didn't see the trap waiting for her. She stepped into it, and a huge net made from woven vines closed shut around her, but only caught her lower half. Her rump became snared in the net, and her legs stuck through large holes in the net's design. Kyra was forced to swiping at the root, which was just inches beneath her paws. She was unlikely to get out, though, because of the way her legs were tangled up.

Silently, a young lion, clearly not an adult, rushed up to the trap. He was extremely small, abnormally so, although his build was that of an adolescent, the muscles somewhat mature. His legs were dainty, long, and thin, with remarkably tiny paws that were covered in long, soft hair that made them rather fluffy, and completely eliminated any sound they produced. The lion's pelt overall was extremely odd. It was a deep, reddish-brown color, rather dark, and he also had markings. A patch of black fur covered his eyes and the bridge of his snout, forming a mask, and he also had black socks on all four paws. His belly, while paler, was barely lighter than his main color. The young lion's tail tuft was silky black fur, and, oddly enough, his mane was not fully grown. He only had a single, long black tuft on the top of his head, which hung forward and almost got in his eyes. The strange lion's eyes were a very pale shade of silver, almost white, enough so that if one didn't know better, they might have thought that he was blind.

Kyra saw the lion, and was relieved to know that this was not a human trap. Regardless, she was mad at him, and threw a fit, swiping her paws furiously as she tried to grab the tree root below her. "Coglon, you let me down here right this instant!" She growled, angry. Her little adoptive brother blinked, "Sister, what are you doing in my net? That was supposed to catch a Kudu, not a lioness." He said, oblivious to Kyra's rage. "Whatever! Just let me down! Right now!" She snapped. Coglon shook his head, "Sorry, Kyra, I have to make sure it's working properly. You are not fully enclosed in the net, which means that it's reaction time is slow. I need to make the vines tighter so they work faster." Kyra growled with frustration, "That's because I was running. I have to gather flowers for a shower for two different reasons." She said, irritated. Coglon's ears pricked up, "A shower?! Well then what are we doing standing here?!" He cried. Running over to a vine and swiftly cutting it with his claws, releasing the net. "Forget this, I can weave a new net any day! A shower is more important!"

Kyra was considering beating the living daylights out of her little brother for trapping her in a net, but at the same time, she couldn't bring herself to do it. She loved him too much to do bodily harm. He just didn't know how to communicate with others. "Never mind, we can go back so I can introduce you to-" Coglon cut Kyra off, "No, no! There's a nice patch of flowers over this way, we get those first, and then you can introduce me to whoever it is you insist on me meeting." He said, before walking off in that particular direction.

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptyTue Aug 06, 2013 6:20 pm

"Is that it?" Scar scoffed. "Yes, thank you Scar" Jali said. She nodded. Feth gave her a confused look. "Sweetie, why are you so angry right now?" he asked. "Just this morning you were so laid back."

"I'm carrying four giant kids inside me! How do you think I feel? Are you three days old? I have mood swings! I've been carrying these things since before we even left Kenya! They could pop out any day now!"

"Really?" asked Jali. "We never smelled that on you."
"I covered myself in Kudu dung, plus I washed myself very often to mask the smell. Now, Feth! Get me home before I puke!" she said. Feth patted her back with his paw. "Come on, let's go. Sorry!" he said to the lion pride as they turned around and walked off.

Nail stayed behind. Var approached and stood next to Jali, realizing the resemblance of Snake. "You summoned me sir?" asked Var.

"Yes. Var, this is apparently your uncle. His name is Nail. He claims to be looking for you" the king replied.

"I'm looking for my brother and ALL his kids" Nail scoffed. Jali gave a narrowed eye. "I told you, Snake and his kids are dead. Var is the only one left. They attacked us and we were forced to take their lives. Have a problem with that? You can leave then."

"No" Nail said. He looked at Var. "You're the oldest?"
"Yes" Var replied.
"I see. Well, I was wondering if you... well, wanted to come out with me. Into the world. Uncle and nephew. I was wanting you, your brothers, and my brother to come out with me so we could be together."

"Sorry, I... I found a pride. I intend on keeping to it" said Var.

"The king will boot you out. You know how prides are. He'll be afraid you'll overpower him. Take his power, his females, and his children."

"Jali is a king unlike many others" said Var. "He's not like the other prides. He lets everyone stay for as long as they like."

"I doubt it" said Nail. "But whatever."

"I'll allow you to stay if you like Nail. But you'll be under watch" said Jali. Nail nodded. He was escorted to an empty "guest den" by a few lionesses and Taru as he sat. Taru stood at the entrance awaiting further commands.

"'Kay, could someone help me get this crap out of my mane?" asked Var. Sira rolled her eyes. She walked over to him, picking things out of his mane as if she were a mother brushing a child's mess up hair.

"Ow!" he gave out. "Sorry" she replied. Kal had been at the entrance of his den watching the entire time. He stepped over, brushing a few weeds out of Var's mane and then stood behind Gamba and Layla as he gave Nail a thorough look-over and then retreated back to his den.

"I can't get some of that out. There's still seemingly hundreds of those thorns. What the heck did you run into? My paws are getting tired" Sira said. "Have Gamba or Layla, or Kyra or your parents or somebody else do it" she said.

Var looked over at Gamba and Layla. "Um, would you guys mind?"

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptyTue Aug 06, 2013 8:31 pm

Gamba shrugged his shoulders, before looking at Layla and nodding. He turned back to Var, "Very well, but you should pay attention to where you're running. Briars don't just make a mess of your pelt, you can get thorns stuck in your paws, and that can hurt." He said, walking over and focusing on the young lion's mane. Before he tried to pick out anything, he unsheathed his claws, and used them to carefully comb out the long fur so that it wasn't tangled. Once he had done this, he pinched thorns between two toes and tugged them out with ease. Because the combed mane was straight, the thorns couldn't snag on anything else. It was a different technique that Gamba seemed to have done before, as he moved rather quickly.

Zanita padded up to the two of them, "I would help, but hyenas just don't have the claws for combing fur like lions do. Gamba used to help the medical hyenas when he was a cub by combing fur away from wounds so we could see how deep they were." Gamba nodded as he concentrated, acknowledging the statement to be true. Zanita suddenly had a teasing look on her face, "Don't worry, not only will you not have briars in your fur, but you'll have the best-looking pelt in the pride by the time he's done." Gamba stopped for a moment and looked at her, his ears flattening. At this, Zanita's ears raised themselves slightly, "What? I'm your mother, don't you know it's my job to embarrass you?" Gamba stared for a long moment after words, before sighing and shaking his head, grudgingly deciding not to say anything, before turning back to his work on Var's mane.

Kyra emerged on the other side of the camp from the way she had left, and was spotted by two guard lionesses. She had in her mouth two kinds of flowers, and therefore couldn't speak. Because she had been taught the names of flowers by her older caretaker, Ammon, she knew each flower's name. One flower, brought for the birth of Mira's cubs, was a branch of sorts, covered in dozens of tiny, bell-shaped white blooms with small purple centers. It smelled sweet, just like honey, and was known as tree heath. It was a beautiful flower, and Kyra thought it was perfect. The other flower, meant for Gamba and Layla, was ornamental, and while it was white, with a deep purple center, the blooms were like stars in shape. These were commonly called star gladiolus. She looked at the two lionesses, and shook her head, before making a motion of swiping her paw across her snout, telling them not to say anything. She then quietly ran over when nobody was looking, and placed the flowers at the entrances of the dens where they were supposed to go. She then disappeared into the trees again, and emerged back on the other side of the camp, where she had left, pretending as though she hadn't done anything.

"Hey guys!" She called, "I'm back, what did I miss?" She asked. Meanwhile, the two lioness guards who had seen her exchanged amused looks, as though they were about to laugh. Kyra was very good at keeping her tradition of the shower anonymous, considering that she had not been seen by Mira, Kal, Gamba, or Layla. It wouldn't take long for them to notice the blooms, now that they had been placed, however. The flower for the cubs was sweetly scented, and the bright flowers were hard to overlook. Before she could proceed past the tree line, however, a small furry shape fell upon her from the branches, screaming, "Terror from above!" In a loud, dramatic voice, as the little lion tackled his older sister, pinning her to the ground, before hopping off, and flicking his tail, as though wanting to play. It was clear that he was even younger than Kyra, but it was also obvious that the lion's mane should have grown in by this point, and that he was abnormally tiny.

Kyra got up, somewhat stunned, "I probably deserved that." She said, turning to the little odd-looking fellow, "Don't do that here, though, you're not supposed to give new friends the wrong idea." She said. The weird lion raised one ear and flattened the other, "Like you did when you probably fell out of a tree after spying on them?" He asked, his guess completely accurate on Kyra's habits. Her ears went back at this, "You...you can't prove anything!" She said, choking out the words. Coglon tossed the shaggy lock of fur on his head to get it out of his face, where it had been covering up one eye, "Don't need to." He said. Kyra sighed, and shook her head, "Fine, whatever." She said, "Let's get this over with."

She slowly walked over to where Sira and Jali were, the underdeveloped-looking lion following behind her. As he moved, the remarkable fur on his paws completely muffled all sound, to the point that his footsteps were completely silent, even to the powerful ears of the hyenas present. His legs were so long and thin, that he might have been walking on twigs. Kyra stopped before the King and Queen, "Sorry if that startled you. Jali, this is my little adoptive brother, Coglon." She looked at her brother, how gazed down at his paws, not looking at the King's face. Kyra turned to him and lowered her head so it was next to his, "Coglon, can you please look Jali in the eye, for me?" She asked. Coglon visibly winced, as though the thought was uncomfortable, but regardless, listened and looked up to meet Jali's eyes. His the color of his own eyes made him look blind, but in fact, he had better vision than most, and his gaze held a clarity that was startling, for someone so young. However, he looked extremely unhappy trying to make eye contact, and his tail twitched nervously. "Greetings, Your Majesty." He said, his voice even, and his vocabulary beautifully polished. Kyra hadn't mentioned to him Jali was king, but Coglon was smart enough to figure it out on his own.

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptyWed Aug 07, 2013 1:25 pm

Jali smiled and lowered his head to meet Coglon at eye level. "You don't have to be afraid Coglon. I am not a normal king. I do not make my pride live off of fear as other kings do. I do not make guests or newcomers feel fear in my presence. I do not make the ones who want to join us prove their strength first. I am not interested in strength, power, speed, beauty, or even intelligence. I am interested in the person underneath" he said before raising his head back up.

"I'd like to welcome you to Sunset Pride. This is the home of many lions. Our pride is without question, probably the largest pride you may ever find due to how many people we take in every moon. This week alone we have gained a lot. Your sister and a friend of hers named Var have been welcomed her just in the period of today and last night" he said. "I'm not much of a person that likes to brag, but without a doubt I am sure you'll find yourself very comfortable if you choose to stay with us." He and Sira gave each other happy glances as he looked back at Coglon.

"I'm sure Kyra can help you find plenty of good people to take as friends. If you ever need anything, just find me or my mate here Sira" he said. Sira gave a sort of "wave" with her paw. "There's also my brother over there who is in charge of our warriors and interactions with other prides" Jali added pointing to Taru
.
Var couldn't help but giggle at Zanita and Gamba. He tried holding it in, but a snicker came out. Layla gave a tiny one out but suppressed it by holding a paw over her lips in fear that it might offend her mate. She walked up to the combing party and watched Gamba's paws as they moved, watching his techniques.

Var felt a bit embarrassed having so many people examining his fur and crowding around him. He felt even more embarrassed by having them actually touching it. But he liked it better than Snake's methods of removing thorns...

******************************************************

He walked over a creek, his paws hurting from all the running he'd been doing. Nithili was at his left. Urathi was walking far behind. Var had a short, short mane being so young though there was still one there.

"Come on! Keep it moving! You're so slow!" Nithili said striking Var's flank with his claws. Var gave out a tiny yelp and began moving much faster.
"That's more like it!" Nithili growled. "Your posture sucks! Start walking more upright! Everyone knows you suck at fighting but at least LOOK tough!"

Var tried to make his body bigger by spreading all four of his legs out and contracting his muscles to make them look bigger. He had some of the best muscles a lion could ask for even as at a young age, but somehow Nithili always had bigger ones.

Finally the two of them made it into a clearing where six tall, thick trees stood in a circle. Each tree had its own strange symbol carved deeply into the bark and even the wood underneath. Snake had done it using his own paws. Though he never told Var what the symbols meant.
"What now?" Snake asked as he turned around from a pile of zebra he was sharing with some stranger lioness who looked terribly in fear, shaking and trembling as she ate.

"Var here got caught in some bushes again. He's got a bunch of nasty thorns in 'is mane" Nithili growled giving Var a quick kick in the gut. Var returned it with a swift claw to the face.
"Boys! Stop it! Nithili, go watch our guest while I get these thorns out" Snake said. Nithili walked over to the poor lioness. She backed away from him and scooted against one of the trees. Nithili sat on a thick root cutting the dirt and simply watched her.

Snake came over to Var and grabbed his ear to pull him over. "Ow!" Var replied. "Shut it" Snake returned.
Snake examined the thorns and the weeds, flowers, branches, and leaves caught in the young lion's fur. He extracted an exhausted sigh. "Will you ever stop running into things Var? You're such a disappointment. Why can't you be more like Nithili?"

"You KNOW that Nithili isn't as smart as me" Var said. "Without me you never would have been able to catch all those zebras last week. And you never would have been able to escape that lioness's mate and her family when they were looking for you."

"I suppose you have a point there" Snake said. He grabbed a tuft of Var's fur and yanked it, stretching it. He took his claws and began cutting it, yanking it as hard as he can in a very harmful manor to produce hurt on Var. Then he snapped the strands off, leaving Var to look like a lioness. Var let a few tears slide down his face, trying to hide them from his father and his brother. But Snake always caught them.

"What? You gonna cry now? Aww, a little lion lost his mane. Suck it up! Use your shame and let it fuel you. What do you feel right now? Tell me. List them all" Snake demanded.
"Shame. Anger. Hate. Hurt. Pain. Loathing. Blood Lust..." Var admitted. Snake gave an amused huff. "That's good, very good. Use that."

Var rolled his eyes as his father finished his haircut. Var immediately went into the bushes and evaded any comments from Nithili. It was a shame to his brother. Nithili really had a few taunts he was going to bring up. Var climbed up a tree as much as he could and sat on one of the thick branches. He liked this one tree. It filled him with a sense of relief from his family. He could see the clearing from there and still hear the words of his father, no matter by shouts or nomal tone.

"Get out of here" Snake told Nithili. Nithili nodded, fearfully and exited the clearing. Snake sat back near the pile of prey. A few zebras stacked on top of each other. He looked at the lioness who was crying as she laid up against the tree.
"Eat" he told her. She didn't want to but she had to. She got up and began eating as Snake watched her aggressively from the other side of the kill.

**********************************************************

Var didn't like the memory. It pained him deeply. He always looked like a girl without his mane. He remembered the shame that his father injected into him not unlike how a venomous snake injects poison into its victim. He supposed it was an even better reason for naming Snake that. He was almost fearful when Gamba and Sira had first put their paws in his hair. He had an involuntary feeling that they'd yank it hard, which made him feel like someone had just blasted his skull into a stretch, and then that they'd cut it all off. He didn't want to look that way. Especially not in front of Gamba, Layla, or Kyra.

He awaited his hair to be finished, but during this time he watched as Jali and Coglon met. He had heard every word and felt a sense of excitement. He wanted the grooming to be done so he could meet Kyra's brother.

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptyWed Aug 07, 2013 8:29 pm

"And...we're done." Gamba said, plucking one last thorn from Var's mane. Just as Zanita had said earlier, the tiglon did an amazing job of grooming fur. Not only was there no more vegetable matter in Var's mane, but the process Gamba had gone by, gently combing with his claws, had harmlessly untangled any mats present, as well. Zanita examined her son's work, and nodded with approval, "My, without all those thorns, you're quite a handsome young lion, if I may be so bold." She said. She then looked up at the sky, where the sun was slowly starting to set. They sky turned orange, but compared to others, it was rather dull. She took a single sniff, and her left ear twitched. "The sunset is plain, today, and my ear is starting to hurt. At the moment, there is not a cloud in the sky, but when my ear aches, rain is coming." She said. She looked at the lions and her son, gathered around, "It will be time for me to head back to my own camp, soon, but before I go," She turned to Layla, "Layla, may I speak with you for a moment? I'm just going to take a quick walk to the other side of the lake, it would mean much to me if you would accompany me." Her face was serious again, and while she might joke and tease when she was happy and amused, Zanita's word was to be heeded.

Coglon nodded, the long lock of fur on his head covering one eye, again. "I will take up residence here, then. My sister choosing to inhabit this Pride is enough proof to me that it is a good place to live. You need not say anything to convince me of this, Your Majesty." He said, before he turned to take a glance at the sunset, his ears and tail twitching restlessly. "Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Season of Light Rain. For the next two moons, our skies will be pure white with clouds, and an endless mist will make everything damp, stopping only when slightly stronger light storms come in. This will not hinder any activities, though a dry den will be welcome." He said, predicting the weather. He turned back to the king, "The Season of Heavy Storms, what follows and lasts for two or three more moons, is what you should prepare for. Clouds black with thunder and lightning will trap us in darkness at odd intervals, rain pouring in torrents, stopping with moments of calm. During the calm, it will be uncomfortably warm and humid, and at night, the cool will become frigidly cold. The most dramatic weather to come each Seasonal Cycle." Coglon flicked his tail.

Kyra's ears flattened, "Seriously, how do you do that?" She asked. Coglon looked at her, "What, exactly? Please be specific." His sister flicked her tail, "How do you predict the weather moons before it comes?" She asked, elaborating. Coglon tossed his head to get his fur out of his eye, "The weather has a Seasonal Cycle, which begins and ends every twelve moons. It always follows a certain pattern, and I base much of what I do off of that pattern. This is the ending of the dry period, and considering that the Sunset Pride was not here previously, and that many still do not try to keep track of the pattern, or have not lived here long enough to notice it, I decided that it would be wise to mention such a thing. I can construct something to help you know which moon in the Cycle it is, but for the time being, such a project must be put on hold. I must build myself a den, first."

"Of course" Layla said taking Zanita's side as they went off on their walk. Var on the other hand thanked Gamba. "Thanks. Best hair job I ever had" he said before turning to Kyra.

"Hey Kyra, this is your brother you told me about?" he asked. "Couldn't help but overhear."

Sira was getting nervous from the talk of the terrible season to come. "Go lay down for a bit. You need to rest. I'll go see how Mira and Kal are doing after this" Jali told her. She didn't like it, but she took her mate's request and went up to the cave where their den was.

"A bad season huh? Well, I'll get everyone ready. I hope it doesn't end up being as bad as the drought in Kenya. Otherwise I'll be convinced that the Spirits are angry with us" Jali admitted. Kal's voice interrupted from the entrance of his den. "Jali, you can't seriously believe that the Spirits would be angry with a pride that does nothing but take in strangers, make them feel at home, and save lives? A pride that has actually befriended not only a hyena clan but a cheetah clan as well? I suppose if evil spirits created this world... But from all the legends we've heard of over the years I doubt they'd be so vile."

"You have a point Kal" Jali said. Jali looked back at Coglon, Kyra, and Var. "Why don't you three get settled in. We still haven't made the three of you your own dens. There are still many spots available unless you want one we've made and is empty. But those ones are usually small and used for guests in the pride that won't be staying long."

Var nodded. "I'll go get started on mine. I'll put it over there on the side of the lake where no one else has put theirs seemingly" he said. He turned and began walking over to a spot where he thought was best.

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptyThu Aug 08, 2013 12:12 am

When Zanita and Layla were far enough away from the camp where they were out of earshot, both from hyenas, or lions, Zanita began to speak. "Layla, let me begin by saying, how grateful I am to you, for caring so much for my son." She said. "I am proud to call you my daughter, and my son couldn't have chosen a better lioness as his mate. Gamba finally has someone to care about, and a person with whom he can share his life." As she spoke, she remained calm and composed, save for her left hear, which never seemed to stop twitching. Her ears lowered, slightly, though, as though at an unpleasant thought, "I just wanted to warn you, though, that there comes a risk with being my son's mate." She said, pausing for a moment to make her point. She stopped, and turned to Layla, her expression sad, "Layla, have you ever considered the concept of having cubs of your own, not adoptive, but ones born of your own blood? Have you ever thought that after some time, you might want to have cubs with Gamba in the future?"

Coglon shrugged his shoulders, "Okay, then, it shouldn't take too long for me to build something." He said. The odd lion then began scanning around the camp, until he saw an empty spot that he seemed to like. It was a large space between the roots of a gigantic tree with a thick trunk, and bark so dark in color it was nearly black, with vertical cracks in it that seemed to ooze a small amount of some sort of black gum. The tree was extremely tall, and its leaves were a dark shade of green, and had a glossy texture to them. The tree seemed to hold a presence of its own, as though it were a powerful guardian, in its own way. Coglon placed his paw on the side of the tree, getting some of the gum on it, and then sniffed it, before nodding in approval, and wiping the ooze off on the side of one of the roots. "Black Ironwood." He observed, before dashing over to a clump of reeds by the pond, which started off, but turned a shade of magenta near the edge of their long, blade-like leaves. He took one and sniffed it, to affirm it was the plant he needed, before cutting a large clump and carrying them over to the Ironwood again. He then lined up the leaves, and carefully manipulated them with his paws, going over and under one another.

Kyra walked over, "So what are you doing now?" She asked, looking over his shoulder, "Weaving thatch. Hey, can you back up a little, please? I can't focus with you breathing down my shoulder." Coglon said, never taking his eyes off of his work. His paws were perfect for what he was doing, so tiny he could easily place them where they needed to go. Kyra shrugged, and walked back over to Jali, "My little brother might be small for his age, but he's a genius, really. He's always got all these ideas and inventions." Coglon was quickly forming the shape of what seemed to be a square mat with his weaving. Soon, he was done, and he placed the mat on the ground between the roots of the Ironwood, so that it was half-covered by the hollow they formed between the ground and the trunk. When he was done, he rushed over to the lake, and got into the water until it was up past the black markings on his legs. He seemed to feel around at the bottom for a moment, before he suddenly seemed to trip on one leg, which sunk in deeper than normal when he took a step. Squinting one eye, Coglon pulled the paw up, holding a lump of reddish clay. He looked at it, hard, before he ran back and smeared the clay over the mat and along its sides. He repeated this several times, until there was a square clay slab tucked under the tree roots. Coglon was building a foundation for the main part of his den, one that once dry would be too heavy to wash away in rain.

Layla had a face that suggested a happy thought. "It's always been my greatest dream to have cubs, my own and of my own blood. Having Gamba as their father would be the greatest gift I could ever ask for" she looked at Zanita's worried face as if expecting something that might worry her.

Jali smiled. "He certainly knows how to make a den" he told Kyra. "Where did he learn all these things?"

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptySat Aug 10, 2013 7:36 pm

Kyra's ears pricked up, "Coglon learns by observation, and once he figures out how something is done, it's highly unlikely that he will forget what he learned. He was abandoned as a cub by his parents because he was too weak to fight his brothers and sisters to nurse, and he was close to starving as a result. However, he was kept long enough for his teeth to develop, so he could eat solid food, and he managed to survive by sheer wit alone." She said, watching as Coglon began making mixtures of reeds and clay of the right consistency, before packing them into rectangular slabs, and stacking them along the sides of the foundation to form the walls of his den. "He doesn't have the strength to hold down struggling prey all by himself, so he had to find a different way of bringing it down, rather than chasing it down and killing it. He began devising traps to snare it so that it couldn't get away, and then, while the prey was caught in his traps, he could get at it without risk of injury. That's actually how I found him, I wasn't paying attention and walked right into some trap he made out of vines." Her ear twitched, and she scratched at it with her hind paw. "Actually, I think he learned a lot from observing humans, although it scares me that he would get close enough to one to watch it. Humans have terrible senses, though, and he's so quiet nobody would notice him. Plus, humans won't hurt you if they think you won't hurt them, usually."

She sighed, and dug her paws into the ground slightly, "Humans are strange things, but they're very good at building dens, the dens last through even the worst kinds of weather, and Coglon seems to be basing his den off of one built by a human. He told me a bit about how it works, I'll see if I can recall what he said, I can't understand what he's saying, half the time." She frowned and closed her eyes, thinking hard, "Oh, yes, now I remember." She suddenly recalled the memory. "This is what he told me about it, 'Humans make their dens out of clay with reeds or grass packed into it, but clay can be very tricky to work with. If it's too smooth or moist, it can't maintain its shape, and bubbles might appear and weaken the structure. If it's too lumpy and dry when you work with it, it becomes brittle once dry, and falls apart too easily. You have to have a balance of the two. The reason organic material is packed into the slabs is because it holds the structure together, and ensures that the brick dries evenly. Structures built using the technique are highly durable because clay doesn't readily absorb water once dry, and it seals out heat effectively cooling the inner part of the den.'" Kyra then blinked, "I still can't entirely get it, won't the grass rot inside of the clay?" Her ears flattened, "Well, regardless, normally he doesn't build dens like this, but considering he's decided to be in Sunset Pride, he must want to build a permanent one that he will like living in. Why he wants it half inside of a tree, though, I can't be sure, but if he does, then there must be something special about Black Ironwoods that I didn't know, that's the first time I've heard the name of that kind of tree, actually."

Zanita's ears flattened, although her left ear continued to twitch incessantly, "Layla, I have no doubt that you and Gamba would make excellent parents, but there is a great risk, if you wish to have cubs together. Gamba, as you are aware, is a hybrid creature, his mother was a lioness, and his father was a tiger, who came from a distant land that is considered to be unforgiving and cold, called Siberia. His blood parents would have never met, had humans not captured Gamba's father and transported him to Tanzania, the land south of Kenya, where he escaped and fathered his child." The hyena leader shook her head, "There is great risk surrounding the birth of hybrid cubs, Layla. Hybrids can be rejected by the mother's body, and miscarried, or they can be born with deformities that make them incapable of survival. Sometimes, instead of gaining their parent's strength, they are sickly and weak, and cannot survive without certain special needs being tended to. Sometimes, they are born lacking the ability to have children of their own." She sighed, and shook her head, "Layla, I can tell you that Gamba is fertile, and can father children. He may want to, but he will not try unless you really and truly want them, because there is great risk for you, as your children will not be considered true lions.

She sat down for a moment, "Layla, if you have cubs with Gamba, they will be second-generation hybrids called Litigons, because they are the children of a Tiglon and a Lioness. It is fully possible for them to be born, but I don't want you to try having cubs unless you know that risk." She stood back up again, and the sun had almost vanished under the horizon, her pelt seeming to be a fragment of the night sky. "There is a way to minimize the risk, however, if you are willing to carry Gamba's children after hearing these things, a way that would decrease the chance of something going wrong, and would ensure that the cubs were born healthy." Zanita looked at Layla, "If you take very good care of yourself during the pregnancy, if you keep a cheerful mood, and you eat enough food and drink enough water, there is a good chance that nothing will go wrong. Gamba can help you develop a specialized diet that should ensure proper development of the cubs, and that they are not miscarried."

Zanita tilted her head to one side, "I want you to know, though, that even regarding the odds of hybrid cubs, the odds are in your favor. Gamba was a healthy cub born to a lioness who suffered extremely stressful conditions that would have resulted in the miscarriage of even a normal pure-blooded lion. Gamba's exceptional health is an indicator of hybrid vigor, which means that he has so far benefited from being a hybrid. That means that there is a good chance that if you have cubs, those cubs will be born without severe deformities, so long as you keep yourself in good health." She looked up at the sky. "It's time to head back, but I just want you to know, Layla, that if you want cubs, you need to tell Gamba, so you can plan for the future. After saying this, though, I want to know what your opinion is. Even after what I have told you, both good and bad, do you still want cubs?" She asked.

Layla thought for a moment though it wasn't a long one. She nodded. "Yes. I do. I think I will do alright with the new safety precautions. I'll make for absolute certain that I do everything you say. I'll tell Gamba in a little while" she decided. "I just can't imagine a future for me without cubs. And even better, a future with cubs and Gamba as their father."

She looked back in the direction of the camp and then returned her glance to Zanita. "My cubs would love this pride. A place where they don't have to compete... So, yes. I still want cubs. I'll take the risk. I'll do whatever it takes."

-------------------

Jali kept examining Coglon's techniques from a distance. "I see" he replied to Kyra. Var came over to the two. "Mine's all done. How'd you guys do?" He asked Kyra as he examined his newly combed mane.

The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Pride Days (IC): Hurt   The Pride Days (IC): Hurt - Page 17 EmptySun Aug 11, 2013 5:58 pm

Zanita nodded, "Very well, then, Layla. You should tell Gamba, then, because one important thing you can do is prepare." She said, as they started walking back. "The last bit of information I can give you is this: I can help by predicting how large your litter may be. Gamba was the only cub born to his mother, but you had one sibling at your birth. This means you may have twins running in your family. If this is so, you are female, and therefore, more likely to have twins, as well." She said. There were two kinds of twins, identical and fraternal. Identical twins were random, but fraternal twins could run in a family. If a mother had twins running in her family, she was likely to have twins, too. If a father did, it had no effect on how many children were born. Only the female mattered, in the cases of fraternal twins. Zanita then pricked up her ears, "Well, regardless, I hope when they're old enough you bring them over to visit. Most lions don't get to meet their grandmother, but considering I'm a hyena, I'll probably still be around when they're born."

They arrived back at the Sunset Pride camp, and Zanita turned to Layla, "I am glad you took the time to walk with me, dear. Now remember, as Gamba's mate, you are now my daughter, and if you need anything at all, come find me. I may be a hyena, but lion problems aren't always restricted to lions." She said, her cheerful attitude having returned. Her left ear flicked, and she scratched it with her front paw. "My goodness, why is it always the left one?" She turned back to her two hyenas who had been idly chatting with the lions and lionesses who weren't doing anything else. "Come along, boys, it's time for us to head back." She said. They then gathered and began to leave, although Zanita stopped and turned to Jali, "Jali, if you need to find me, our camp is just west from yours. All you have to do is look for the Nightshade Forest. There's a hill there, just climb to the top and you'll find us." With this, she bid everyone farewell, and the three hyenas left.

After saying goodbye to his mother, Gamba walked over to Layla, "Zanita is probably going to say she has a daughter as soon as she walks into her Clan's camp. As far as she is concerned, you are her daughter just as much as I am her son. Really, that went well, I should think." He was in rather good spirits, knowing Zanita had so quickly accepted Layla as family. He had been momentarily worried that she might get upset, as it was supposedly every parent's dread for their children to finally fall in love. Maybe that only applied to females, but Gamba had heard stories of mothers criticizing their son's wife, too.

Kyra's ears flattened, "Oh my goodness! I completely forgot! We were watching Coglon build his den, and I was completely sidetracked!" She was supposed to have building a den, but she hadn't even started. She was fascinated by what her brother was doing. After having built the walls up to a good height, He had been gathering low-hanging branches from the ironwood tree, which he had to break off by repeatedly hammering at them with his claws. He struggled in doing this, and it was obvious that the wood itself was extremely strong. It was also apparently very heavy, at least for him, because he had difficulty hauling them around. Once he did, he used his paws and his teeth to split the branches, which he then laid on top of the den, so they would form a grid-like pattern. He was now placing thatched grass on the wood frame, and using bits of clay to hold it down. He did not start packing clay onto the roof until the thatch was extremely thick, as a roof that was far too heavy with uneven distribution of weight could collapse, a common concept in any den. The den was not only appealing in appearance, but it looked extremely comfortable inside, as well as remarkably sturdy. Coglon was definitely creative in regards to his works.

"I'm so glad she accepted me. It's amazing to know I'm related to both lions and hyenas" Layla replied. "Gamba would you come over with me for a minute?" There's something I want to talk to you about."

She lead him off a little past the lake to a small clearing she came upon by chance. It was outlined with a circle of soft trees and bushes full of red berries. The early night sky was beautiful above it. Layla thought it was the perfect place to go if she needed to get away from the camp for a while.

"Gamba, your mother and I talked about the possibility of the two of us becoming parents. She told me about all of the risks and I'm well aware of everything now. I've always wanted to be a mother, I couldn't imagine my future not containing cubs. If you are their father, that would make it even better. I know about the risks and the changes I'd have to make to everyday life to keep myself in good health during the pregnancy. I just need to know when you are ready. I'm only ready if you are. So Gamba would you ever... Like to try? Would you ever be interested in being a father?" She asked scratching behind her ear half-shyly.

Gamba looked down at his paws, thinking, "Zanita told me when I first set out in search of a pride that I was capable of having children." He began, "Although at the time, the thought of cubs didn't appeal to me, perhaps because I was too young to want them. As I got older, though, I thought how it would be wonderful to have cubs of my own. I was raised to be family-oriented, I grew up being surrounded by loved ones who cared about me, so naturally, when I was old enough, I wanted children. I just never thought I would ever have a mate who would be willing to carry them." He said, before looking back up at Layla. "We are mates, Layla, wanting cubs is expected, as is trying to have them. Nobody will condemn us if we wish to be parents. Yes, if you are willing to do this, then we may try, and we will do what we can to make it as safe as possible, both for you and for the cubs."

Layla smiled. "Great, I love to hear that" she said. "This would be a good place to go to rest. I could also have them here since I'd rather give birth to them away from the rest of the pride in private."

"There'd be a lot of shade here during the day" she said gesturing to the limbs of the trees. "I could stay here most of the time. I'd have to take a break from hunting and stuff. I'll have to tell Jali that I can't work as a guard for a while. Guards have to fight stuff of every day. I'll have to relax. Zanita told me you knew a special diet and a bunch of things I could do to keep myself healthier" she said. She wasn't at all worried. She felt happy and joyful inside. It was obvious that she was excited.

She walked around the clearing with an almost childish movement, excited and unable to control some of it all while she examined her new sanctuary. Finally she came back over to Gamba and sat in front of him on her haunches, waiting for his reply.

Gamba nodded, "Alright, then, Layla. This place seems to be secluded enough where you will have privacy, and it appears to be safe enough where creatures will not wander in on you unannounced. I will still come and check on you, regardless, your safety will be of the utmost importance to me. I will bring back food for you myself, to ensure that you are getting all the needed nutrition for you and our cubs to remain healthy. We do not want something to go wrong; the pregnancy will be very risky." He flicked his tail, "After we try, we won't know if the pregnancy takes until a few days pass, I'll know as soon as possible, though, if your scent changes. Until then, don't do anything too physical, you can still walk around, but nothing too intense. It's more likely to take that way." His ears flattened slightly, "I must sound like a medical hyena, right about now." His ears pricked up again, "At any rate, we'll try, and you can choose if you want to come with me to tell Jali or not, if you don't want to, it's fine."

(Okay, let's fade to black and end this moment before things get too awkward.)

(right, lets just do a time skip to the next morning)

Jali awoke. Sira breathing softly asleep next to him. He stood up and stretched and sat at the entrance to the cave. He yawned as he watched the few lions that were out in the camp. Taru was still guarding the den that Nail was in. He came down into the camp and sat next to Taru, exchanging hellos.

As the sun rose, Gamba emerged from a clump of bushes, looking up at the sky. The sky was pure white, completely covered with clouds, obscuring the deep blue that most lions were used to. The sun was just an orb, blocked, but determined to let its light shine through. A patch of clouds was illuminated in one patch, where its rays came from. The ground was somewhat damp, and dew sparkled on the leaves of the trees and grasses. A fine mist hung in the air, and little wisps of fog were seen all over the lake's surface. A refreshing cool hung about the place, crisp and delightful, but not unbearably cold. Gamba and Layla had vanished into the woods and had not been seen all night, and Layla was still not anywhere to be found. Gamba had decided to go ahead of his mate, giving her the choice of whether or not she wanted to come a bit later, after he had given the news to Jali. He slowly approached Jali and Taru, pacing himself, although the powerful muscles in his legs twitched and suggested he wanted to move in great bounds, rather than long strides. His tail was oddly still, when it normally flicked all the time. His ears were pricked and alert. His face held an expression of both joy, as well as anxiety, as though conflicted about some question he wasn't able to decide.

In truth, trying to tell King Jali that he and Layla were going to try to have cubs seemed a lot easier in his mind. He had been calm at first, but now he was worried about what Jali and Taru's actions might be. They were both good lions who no doubt understood that he and his mate would want cubs, but Gamba couldn't shake the touch of anxiety he felt. That was why he told Layla to wait before coming to the camp, if she decided to do so. Usually, a pregnancy needed a few days before someone knew for sure that it took, but regardless, Gamba didn't want Layla to feel nervous regarding their decision. Of course, even for someone who was normally well-spoken and good with words, Gamba felt very anxious because of this, so he took his time walking towards Jali, as he needed a minute to steel his nerve. He then stopped before Jali and Taru, giving them nods of acknowledgement.

"Morning, Jali, Taru." He said, addressing both of them, keeping his voice steady and remarkably calm, somehow conflicting with his twitchy, anxious body language. "May I please speak with you for a moment somewhere more private? It's very important." He looked over his shoulder, his ears going back and forth, before he looked back at the King and his brother.

Taru and Jali glanced at each other and the. Back at Gamba. "Of course" Jali said as they both left. Taru shouted for one of the guards to watch Nail while they were gone. They went behind a large group of trees, away from the hearth of the camp where they could be heard.

"What is it?" He asked.
